Like transporting our astronauts to the ISS???
While I think the ISS is super cool, as far as space missions go its not really that ground breaking.
I attend a monthly "space" update from our local science musuem, and they barely mention the ISS. Of course with all of the exoplanets being discovered. Even though kepler is disabled, they are still finding all sorts of great information in the data they have gathered.

I don't consider the space program unnecessary as our continued development and understanding of the universe will be critical to mankind's survival.
We're talking about a cut to manned space flight, not all the various types of NASA missions. I'm a NASA fan, but I don't think manned space flight fits in the "critical to mankind's survival" category.

Lets see I think NASA Stands for
National Aeronautics and Space Administration
I would think that manned space flight would be one of the main goals or is that so 1960's.

Those damn robotic missions were a huge success (not to mention, cheap). I don't know why they're not doing more of those. I think one of them is still freaking running.

we got an update a few months ago. They have found so much stuff.
The exo planet stuff is the coolest right now, although the higher orbit stuff is pretty cool. I was so bummed when kepler died.
eta: there are more planned. I think its not for another 5 or so years.

NASA was great, time for entrepreneurship to carry the torch

I disagree... I think we should still be constantly flying missions, gaining experience/insight, and stretching further and further out.

Maybe we have reemphasized our space program at Nasa, but we surely know more about Muslims contributions to space exploration!

A good example of how government can pave the way for private industry with base research. Without NASA, Saturn 5, etc., Virgin Galactic, SpaceX wouldn't be possible.

Penn and Teller did a great episode on NASA, but this is one of those things like the military that just can't be done privately.
I hate government, but I wouldn't be opposed to NASA. Establishing settlements beyond earth is important and that is the end game. We've stopped pushing the limits

When projects are shut down people retire and move on to other industries and that knowledge is lost...

Is this one of those "let's stop this wreckless spending spree on unnecessary stuff....except for the unnecessary stuff I like" type deals?
NASA is one of the greatest things this gov't has ever done. It as spurred so much innovation in the public and private sectors. A huge majority of the technology and comfortable and convenient lifestyles we enjoy today owe a huge thanks to NASA. It's absolutely criminal how we have neglected NASA and impeded their innovation. If it were up to me, I'd cut off funding for a lot of entitlements and DOD budgets and transfer it to NASA.

Yeah well, whatever! Our Muslim outreach program is superior to theirs.
