Because there is a wide difference of opinion between American and Israeli Jews. It makes historical sense too. American Jews have valued America's model of civic nationalism, where anyone can be American and participate in the wider culture even if they aren't a member of the majority group, while Israeli Jews have developed a separate Jewish identity, distinct from American Jews.
