Real Question: why the anthem at a sporting event?

In all seriousness, can someone explain why a sporting event is required to play the national anthem. I am a proud American who believes this is the greates country on earth and would like to keep it that way, but why are athletic events the one place that the anthem has to be played? Never understood this.

It is a tradition to celebrate/honor the sacrifice made by brave American soldiers, the mere fact we are free to even have the opportunity to watch overpaid cry babies play a damn game.

Why no anthem before operas and plays and concerts of all kinds? Just wondering before a sporting event. Something in the constitution? Something inherently patriotic about beer swilling gladiator viewing? Just curious

It is to unify competitive teams and fans as Americans while showing respect to those who have served and died for our freedoms.

The first instance was at the dedication of some baseball field in 1869 or so.
Why SHOULDN'T it be played?
Why should the left destroy every single God damned tradition in the country just for the frick of it?

Basically it was started during war time to induce patriotism and it stuck

There is no requirement. Just like there is no requirement that I support these kneeling assclowns.

Because operas/plays/concerts is where all the Prog/Libs were hanging, duh!

AH! Here it comes.... the few will rule what the majority want...

It started with baseball during the first world war, maybe in Chicago or Boston, I forget. It just kinda caught on and spread through sports. Over the years people in the stands paid less and less attention to it but 9/11 refocused people, since then the level of decorum in the stands has slipped back closer to pre-9/11 days IME.

Not saying it shouldn’t be. Just trying to understand why it must be.

Once again, it's not required, but most people enjoy it.

Oh look a real answer.
Thank you

It's called a tradition. Why the hell to progressives hate tradition so much?

And another question, why is my sincere questioning of the practice and it’s origins or necessities seen as an attack on someone’s patriotism rather than the simple seeking of knowledge? Some of you guys take everything the wrong way. To me, that is part of what is missing in our culture. Everything is this or that, hate you or love you. Perhaps a quest for knowledge is not a statement of my creed or philosophy. I stand when the anthem is played. I pledge when the pledge is done at events. I love this country and will not watch NFL despite my own belief that I could care less if someone kneels or stands. I think people should do their jobs and be happy to live in a country where they make millions to be children. But I still wanted to ask the question. Hope this doesn’t blow some of your minds.

Because it's the American fricking Dream in song. I can see an argument against the Pledge of Allegiance since you pledge loyalty to something that may go tyrannical and I think is a bit dictatorly to be honest, but the Star Spangled Banner? Get the frick out.

Completely agree. They should stop playing it at sporting events between 2 teams from the same country.

Because plays and the opera aren't fricking American. Baseball and football are.

Ok. Anything else American we should play it before? Eating apple pie perhaps?
