Rand Paul: Is Senate Obamacare Better than Doing Nothing?

Those desperate to SAY they did something about Obamacare rather than actually DOING something about it have reached the point where both arguments are being made against those of us opposed or undecided on a genuinely bad bill. “You have to do this for the team.” “If you don’t accept this, you’ll get nothing.” Both of these are false and I think the public should hear why.
I do belong to a “team” in politics. I ran as a Republican. I caucus as a Republican. I vote for people sometimes because, while I have misgivings, in general, they believe similar things. But I didn’t give that “team” my soul or my ideology. I join with them when I agree or when I don’t have a strong opinion. I go against them plenty of times, such as on privacy and civil liberties, and all too often, unconstitutional war.
Let me be clear – when I took office, I didn’t swear an oath to my “team.” No, that oath was to uphold the Constitution, and I’m pretty positive bailing out insurance companies wasn’t envisioned in that document.
But more importantly, I have to be who I am and who I told the people who supported me I would be. I told them I’d repeal Obamacare. I told them I’d vote for more capitalism and free markets in health care to finally fix a system that has been getting worse my entire adult life.
I told them that if nothing else, they could always count on me to stand up for what I believe, to stand for principle, and to do what I said I would.
My “Team” is asking me to abandon all of those things to pass a deeply flawed bill. It does not repeal Obamacare. Let me repeat that because it’s important:
The Senate Obamacare bill does not repeal Obamacare, it keeps it.
It keeps the majority of the Obamacare taxes. It keeps 10 out of 12 of the major Obamacare regulations. It allows continued, unsustainable expansion of Medicaid beyond the poor and disabled. It continues the idea that insurance should be subsidized by the taxpayers for nearly everyone, and it has a $200 billion dollar bailout for insurance companies.
It’s not what I ran on. It’s not what any of my colleagues ran on.
But they’re lining up and doing what they’re told, because they’ve accepted the premises on which Obamacare was built and because they’re scared to be seen as “doing nothing.”
Well, if this is “something” count me out. I’d rather explain to the voters that we didn’t yet have enough real Republicans in Washington for full repeal, we did what we could and we’ll keep fighting.

But he didn't come with a wall. And he talks funny, about things we don't understand.

I keep telling people Paul and Lee and Cruz wouldn't allow any crapfest to pass. 2 of 3 held up

The man who should have been president. Consider that well formed, well reasoned statement vs Trump rambling and shitposting.
God help us.
God help us.

The greatest are never appreciated in their own time. We need 51 Rands in the Senate if we ever hope to get real change.

I personally believe candidate Trump's 'advisors' identified him as the most principled Republican candidate, thus his ill treatment almost immediately at the first debate by Donald Trump.

In terms of policy, he was my #1 choice.......by a lot. And, that's really all I care about.
But, I've been a political watcher long enough to also know that he's not a terribly viable candidate because whether I like it or not, Americans don't vote purely on policy.

No shite. Which is why we'll be watching interviews with Senator Ritchie from Michigan in a couple of years. And they will be par for the course.

If they did, it would have been Paul vs. Webb.

Assuming all that is true - and I trust Rand Paul to not mislead about this kind of stuff - I certainly prefer a straight repeal of Obamacare, or let it stand and stink up the DEM "legacy" of ramming this down America's throat.
Of course it will take some guts to fully exploit the DEM mendacity and malfeasance enough for the public to fully get the picture. = tossup
HOWEVER - the mess created by DEMs and Obamacare make it very difficult to 'replace' under the rules of the senate with the DEMs in obstinate non-support of any fix. Perhaps this was the best they could do trying to maneuver thru the rules with such a thin majority.
SO - the best thing now is to just repeal the damn thing = this will DARE the DEMs to sit back and do NOTHING but object to correcting the problem.
For a law that effects so much of the economy, and which directly impacts the lives of almost every American, it really needs support from both sides of the aisle in order for it to not be a continuing football punted back and forth between two bitter rivals. We do need something that will pass the 100 man Senate - not a partisan hack job compromising principles to get 50 votes with only a 2 vote majority.
REPEAL the damned thing.

If he wins and uses his real name while in office, I'll shoot him myself.
I will watch CSPAN every day just so I can hear "I yield the balance of my time to the distinguished Senator from Michigan, Mr. Rock".

Rand is better served in the Senate than as president. In the Senate, he is better apt at passing legislation. I like Rand, as he is someone who is principled, but I don't think he is someone who can rally people behind him--at least those who aren't the free market type.

Cruzs' bill for congressional term limits needs to be brought up in the media asap. The Don needs to start tweeting or addressing it when he's on camera.

I was a Rand man until he dropped out.
The masses are too dumb for Rand.

#thatsmypresident
if all the people that claim to have been Rand supporters in the Primaries actually supported him, he would be POTUS

The Republicans nominated Dewey and Eisenhower instead of Robert Taft. With Ike, we got the beginning of the MIC, which now controls this country.
Some time later, along comes Ron Paul, the most conservative congressman since Robert Taft. He runs for President in 2008 and 2012, but instead is laughed at by most Republicans, who instead vote for 2 neocons in McCain and Romney, an ideology that has its roots in the Trotskyist dens of 1940's CCNY.
Then in 2016, Rand Paul runs for President and gets little support, even though he was the only candidate on stage who combined a principled non-interventionist foreign policy with a commitment to reduce spending and begin paying off the national debt.
The American public are idiots. They have been given chances to right the ship, but are either too scared of actual freedom or too dependent on the cradle to grave welfare state to do the right thing.
