I find it comical and disgusting in the same breathe that there are people hating on Trump because he has respect for the role of the second most influential person of power in the world. He doesn't respect Putin's politics. Yet, we have haters here in the states that hate Trump because of his politics that show no respect for the office he holds since he is the one holding it.

Kumquat, maybe he means that he got to know about the policies and tactics of Putin and not the man himself on a personal level. There is no trail pointing to his knowing Putin personally before running for office.

He was not referring to that. He saying he got to know him very well when they were stablemates together on 60 minutes .
And yes there is a trail from his other contradictory quotes as well.

Iran is the number one state sponsor of terror, and has been for decades. It's those groups of hamas and hezbollah that are funded by Iran that put them up over other countries.

But they were together in the same place for the 60 minutes article. The same article (Time) that references the term "stablemates" refutes that Putin and Trump ever met. Why Trump references that they did, who knows. This article paints the picture that Trump was pumping ratings.
