With more than $300,000 and volunteer homeowners, Multnomah County has a new idea to fight homelessness: Build tiny houses in people's backyards and rent them out to families with children now living on the street. The homeowners would pay nothing for the construction. They would become landlords and maintain the units for homeless families for five years.

quote:

Four tiny houses are tentatively scheduled to launch this June at $75,000 apiece, with the hope for up to 300 accessory dwelling units as they're known in the next year if the first ones work out.

Don't have time to quote the rest of the story, but look at the pics and see what $75K gets you in Portland these days.

Looks like a 30 year old aluminum Sears tool shed.

It's a shack made of particle board and tin. Are they actually going to build a homeless encampment with this shite?

Who wants that in their backyard? And how would the homeless afford rent?

And how are those worth $75k a piece?

If it's that easy to dupe Portland politicians I need to get into contracting

if you build it, they will come!

If this succeeds, I will donate $500 to Bernie Sanders for U.N. Secretary General

Great idea. All southern cities with homeless problems should contribute by paying for the bus fare of their homeless to travel to Portland.

You should be able to build ten of them for 75,000

But then the politicians wouldn't get their kickbacks.

$75k a pop? Good God what a bunch of morons. You can get those damn barn storage sheds for $4k. You could fit five or six of these Hooverville dwellings in one of those. Adding a window unit and insulation wouldn't cost much more.

The Holden administration has been buying them bus tickets to Atlanta for years. How do you think downtown looks the way that it does today?

Why not rent a home for $1000 a month for a year and use the remaining $63K for training and education to get a job? You can get a degree at a community college for a lot less than that. Potential residents obviously are already receiving assistance for food and everything else already.

Just wondering what they do for plumbing. Do they have a five gallon bucket to shite in, go dump it somewhere and bring their potable water back in the same bucket?

No way I would have that in my backyard next to my family 24/7. This is going to end badly.

Yeah, but think of all the bum fights you'll get to watch from your back patio.

Should be fun listening to the sales pitch when one of these homeowners try to sell their home.

"We're leaving the refrigerator, the curtains and the homeless couple in the backyard."

I bet we see lots of literal NIMBYism
