Donald Trump begins his presidency facing unprecedented polling headwinds: Roughly a quarter of voters think Donald Trump is the worst president in the past century. Forty-three percent of voters are ready to vote for a nameless Democrat in 2020, while just over a third say they'll vote for Trump.

But, in the fourth week of Trump's presidency, a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll shows that Democrats could be in trouble — and Trump could triumph — if they continue their lurch to the left.

Story Continued Below

Despite the public's increasing misgivings about Trump's behavior and tactics in the White House, he still beats Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) in a hypothetical matchup, 42 percent to 36 percent — a fairly impressive margin for a less-than-popular president against the prominent senator.

Who else is the left going to trot out?

The Dems are really lost in the woods if she gets the nomination.

If those numbers are accurate (SeldomSeen), it's still not great for Trump.

I don't think Warren should be anywhere within striking distance considering her still relatively limited exposure to the public at large.

I don't say this as a "haha frick Trump" thing, I say it as I hope he can pull better numbers in the future thing, because Warren being close to the presidency would be horrifying.

Im sure these people made up their minds to give him a full and unbiased chance beforehand.

who else do they have really?

Corey Booker wants so badly to be Warren that he's creating a terribly inconsistent record trying to turn into a progressive BUT he also does shite like vote against the pharma bill (that Bernie was pushing)

Kamala Harris is a younger, black version of Warren. she and Booker are going to engage in 3 years of one-upsmanship of promoting crazier and crazier progressive beliefs to become "the one"

Castro was supposed to be the golden boy but he's fallen and has authenticity issues (last i heard after a few years of trying, can't even speak spanish yet)

It's Trump vs Warren now? Jesus, talk about a race to the bottom.

I suspect that if Trump serves out his full term, he still won't want to run again in 2020. There's just no money in it.

Because if one thing can help an annoying, bitchy woman's success, it is exposure

As his policies become more and more successful, his numbers will only increase. Establishment attacks against him are also not hurting him in any way.

Hillary Clinton is a normal, bitchy woman who won a popular vote. I'd prefer Warren never be able to pull the numbers Hillary did. We need to keep Warren where she belongs, on the fringe, with the nuts.

The Dems could win with Jim Webb (or a Jim Webb type).

Jim Webb's Twitter

But if Trump keeps them riled up enough, they'll run another leftist loser.

I don't think that really matters as much as people think.

Good. Looking like it will take all eight years to weed out Obama's people from D.C.

Said this from the beginning. He's the closest thing to Trump without being too far left.

I think more than anything this election caused a lot of Democrats to lose faith in the party leadership. Their choosing HRC before the primaries, sabotaging Bernie, and their complete disregard for what the base wants caused a lot of headaches.
