re: Poli board Poll: Are you better off than your dad was?

My dad was a welder and my mother a produce mgr in a grocery store. Dad went to work in the local steel mill when he was 15 (forged birth certificate) and retired at 65. The only time he missed in all those years is when he was drafted during the Korean War. My parents made a pretty standard living for small town Alabama, but my dad had a pension that put them over the top at retirement.
I work in tech and my wife is an architect. We probably bring home 3x the money (even adjusted) they did, but I don't expect to receive the SS benefits they did...although I am one of the lucky 10% who still has a good pension plan and 401k.
My parents had a nice ranch house that they kept well maintained and paid off early, always had decent cars, got to go on reasonable vacations, had a fishing boat that was often used, and enjoyed living in their time & place. No matter how much more financially better off we are, we'd be lucky to have as nice of a life.

Yes. I married a younger woman, and have kids at home, and work in defense-related technologies. I have to stay in fit shape and keep up! Working in the latest technologies helps, too.

He was a big liberal Dem. One of his issues was that he grew up poor because his parents had so many kids. He was a big fan of abortion. If you had control of your life would you have preferred to be born into your family with 2 or 3 kids so that resources weren't stretched so thin?
Hell no! I can't imagine how much my childhood would've have sucked without all my brothers and sisters. Growing up we bickered and fought, but it's so cool when we all get together at holidays, you never saw so much food and there's always new little ones coming into the tribe.
If you need someone who really knows you there's nothing like talking to a brother or sister. I'm so damn blessed to have been raised with a big family.

Better off thanks in large part to opportunities given to me by both my parents.

For me c. Though maybe it would be better for me to compare myself to my mom. That would be b.
For my husband it's definitely c. His parents sacrificed so much so that he could have the opportunities they didn't have.

At my age, my dad was a welders helper offshore.
Today, he makes mid 6 figures doing Lord knows what for one of the majors.
Today, I'm an engineer in a chemical plant making just in to the 6 figure range.
I'd say I'm ahead of the game, but he's in his mid 40's and he will probably work til he's forced into retirement so I probably have some big shoes to fill.

C) much better off.
My parents barely finished high school and made a lot of bad decisions when they were younger. My wife and I both have master's degrees and waited until our crap was together before we got married. Having a wife who's even bigger cheapskate than me really helps reign in the finances.

Damn. Most of the people on this board had some broke arse fathers.
Posted on 7/9/17 at 2:45 pm to Zach
Actually, slightly better off. He had to work full time while in law school where I've been able to just work part time and should graduate sooner. We'll see how well off I am after graduation and the job hunt.

Yep. But they had fathers. My dad dropped out of HS due to the Depression to work as a manual laborer. He was a roustabout and a tool pusher. I have no idea what the difference in those jobs is. But it was very physical labor.
My dad was not very verbal. But he won the most important debate. They were too poor for more than one child. Mom got pregnant with No. 2 and insisted on an abortion. Dad said "Nope. We'll manage." Dad won the argument. I was born.

Like saddling us with an insane amount of unfunded liabilities?
And yes I think I am better off

Growing up in the 50s every parent wanted their children to be 'better off' than they were. That's why they made financial sacrifices for their kids.
And, every generation seemed to be better off. I'm not sure if that's true today.
So... At your current age how do you stack up financially compared to your dad when he was the same age?
a. not as well off
b. about the same
c. better off
Financially....C
Overall....A....but most of that is because I don't have a younger me as a son.

Hell no. But my dad married a millionaire

Does that mean you have a daughter, or a son not like you, or no children?
