I believe using the MIL death as an excuse would have been a lot more effective/ sincere if the husband would have initiated it...
"hey... my mother just passed away and my wife is just upset. I promise we will not have any more outbursts the rest of the flight. I'm so sorry for the disruption"
Not sure if it would have mattered at that point but I get the feeling it was a relief for the husband that they were kicked off the plane.

Intolerant view of others with different opinions - check.
Verbal attack and harassment of that person - check.
Characterizing that person as subhuman, stupid, and evil - check.
When caught with their bullshite they immediately play a victim card - check.

In my household that's how it would have went. But that's because we live in a conservative household and my wife lets me handle situations.
