WASHINGTON (AP) — The first criminal trial facing former President Donald Trump is also the one in which Americans are least convinced he committed a crime, a new AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll finds.

Only about one-third of U.S. adults say Trump did something illegal in the hush money case for which jury selection began Monday, while close to half think he did something illegal in the other three criminal cases pending against him. And they’re fairly skeptical that Trump is getting a fair shake from the prosecutors in the case — or that the judge and jurors can be impartial in cases involving him.

Still, half of Americans would consider Trump unfit to serve as president if he is convicted of falsifying business documents to cover up hush money payments to a woman who said he had a sexual encounter with her.

While a New York jury will decide whether to convict Trump of felony charges, public opinion of the trial proceedings could hurt him politically. The poll suggests a conviction could hurt Trump’s campaign. Trump enters a rematch with President Joe Biden as the first presumptive nominee of a major party — and the first former president — to be under indictment. A verdict is expected in roughly six weeks, well before the Republican National Convention, at which he will accept the GOP nomination.

So this entire piece from AP News is about how the trial helps/hurts Trump's campaign, but it's totally not a politically motivated show trial in some banana republic.

All that courtroom needs is an empty chair for the accused.

Yeah, but what does SFP think? That's all that really matters.

This has routinely been towards the bottom of the Trump trial risk power rankings. I think it may have always occupied the lowest spot, IIRC

That isn't even the right question to ask.
Ask "Would Trump be in court defending this if he were a Democrat".
You will find 85% plus recognize this as dangerous weaponization of Justice.

The corollary is that 90% of the US population population could not tell you the nature of the charges.

at this point, most opinions regarding guilt/innocence are pure team politics.

I was listening to a news report on the way into work this morning, the judge asked the pool who among them didn't believe they could be impartial towards the defendant (Trump), about half raised their hands (and they were excused from the pool). One person was overheard in a hallway saying "I just couldn't do it."

Team Democrat better hope this isn't the case. If it is, Biden will lose worse than Mondale.

Let's not get carried away. It's not difficult to get out of jury duty and few would really want to be a part of this kangaroo court.

I would do everything I could to get on the jury of a Trump case.

Those who remained silent included several who had already decided to vote for the prosecution and one or two who intend to deadlock the jury to Trump's benefit.

Just look at the immediately-preceding post:

With any luck, the meat of the voir dire will weed-out both groups.
