Listening to NPR about group of kids expelled for liking racist post on instagram in California. ( interesting question on first amendment versus school safety etc)

This otherwise intelligent lady calls in and calls the professor that is doing nothing but defending free speech and quoting the law a conservative nut with just an opinion on the first amendment. She then states that lots of other professors believe you have no constitutional right to insult people or make them feel bad and that schools should be safe zones.

I could not fricking believe it. Safe zones trumping the constitution. Are you fricking kidding me?

I think most post here are obnoxious bullshite and often racist and just ignorant beyond belief. But I would die and many many members of family have already died to protect your right to be an idiot a-hole if you desire. Free speech is not about protecting popular speech or that you agree with it is about the opposite.

I support the right of the KKK and neo nazis to match and protest the same as black panthers or BLM. It's not the message that matters but the right to be heard

The far left is as much a clear and present danger to the Country as the far right.

To be fair the post was more than just a "racist post", it had a black student and teacher with nooses around their necks...

Where in the Constitution does it guaranteed the right to Free Speech, unless you think it's reprehensible?

Would prefer you fight rather than just show up and die.

I'm surprised the left hasn't introduced a "Speech Tax" yet.

It doesn't and I have no opinion on this incident other than he should be honest in his description. Most people will think liking a racist post means they liked a post talking about how criminal the average black person is, how low black IQ's are or how blacks love them some fried chicken...something along those lines.

Liking a post which shows black students and teachers that they see at school, and who see them, on a daily basis being lynched is WAY different. Anyone who is being honest would admit that.

ETA: My reply is based on the assumption you added the comma by "accident", like you added the d after guarantee and capitalized free speech. If you put it there on purpose the answer is the 1st amendment and I don't find free speech reprehensible.

The d is typo.

Free speech was capitalized by the phone and I didn't bother to change it.

Now, about the rest of your bullshite rambling.

A professor at Texas A&M recently called for the killing of White People. He was not disciplined because of "free speech".

You liberals want to pick and choose who is afforded free speech.

The First and Second Amendments are not flexible to the whims of you leftist idiots.

You do understand the current administration is actively exploring the possibility of limiting the first amendment?

Educate yourself and know where the true danger lies

The first amendment does not grant one the right to say anything anywhere or to express oneself in any manner at any time.

Obviously I am not a follower. Sorry to disappoint you.

No, true right wingers don't compromise the First Amendment no matter who is offended.

You seem to be having a hard time in life. Simple concepts seem to evade you.

Show me where I have been against the First Ammendment or been offended in any post I have ever made...I'll wait. All I have said in this thread is the OP should give accurate information since our arguments should be able to stand on their own merit, we don't need to leave out parts of the story in order to make our arguments stronger...that is what liberals do. You want a race war to start ASAP so why wouldn't you want the full info out there so you could support it?

Let me preface that I'm a conservative and MAGA all the way.

Having said that, this is a touchy subject. Liking a racist picture (as it turns out a pic of a black teacher and students with nooses around their necks) is the digital equivalent of shoving a picture in someone's face and laughing. As constitutionally appropriate as the students' actions are, they should have known there might be repercussions and proceeded to toe the line. There are many legal rights that get stripped from a person before they step foot on school property....well maybe not stripped since we live in a free country, but legal and/or academic consequences might ensue.

In short, I agree that the kids have the right to like whatever pictures they want, but a school has the right to discipline its students in whatever fashion they desire. What I was taught in school is that when you're off campus, you continue to represent your school whether you like it or not, and your actions either enhance or tarnish a school's image.

Those kids are dumbasses and I agree with disciplinary action but expulsion is a bit much. I would agree with suspension and quite a few detentions.

Free Speech protections in public schools are more limited than in the general public. The speech cannot intimidate other students (Tinker v. Des Moines). Not sure about all of the facts in this case but it seems like the school would have the legal ability to take disciplinary action in this case.
