These people need to take a Soviet history class.
Much of the Soviet Union's leadership history was either dictators or a small group of elites who held the power. Power gain usually came through appointments by other Communist Party leaders and struggles within the party. Don't like your government? Too bad, because the people don't get to choose their government.
The point of saying this is to say that, protesting in favor of one candidate and getting a say as to who you want to follow, wasn't actually acceptable in the Soviet Union.
