That smart thing to do would be to call it and have a few units wait outside for this guy.

Most cops aren't that smart though, and rather play Dirty Harry.

It was all a big misunderstanding. The (original) felon said "I ain't do nothing, dog".

The deputy hear the word "dog" and instinctively pulled out his gun...

Sounds dangerous as hell to me fully justifying shooting inside a F'ing collateral damage victims rich environment possible in the extreme. Off duty cop should have to surrender his weapon at the end of each shift.
