To build a diverse class of students, the medical school at UC Davis ranks applicants by the disadvantages they have faced. The disadvantage scale helped turn UC Davis into one of the most diverse medical schools in the U.S. Can it work nationally?

Replying to @nytimes
Hahaha

Are you saying that being black or Hispanic is a disadvantage?

Ouch

This may not work like they think it will.

The racist progressive mindset just assumes that all blacks have experienced “adversity”. Will the rich black elites be okay with their mediocre children not getting into Ivy League schools?

The next Vietnamese child of a Louisiana fisherman who has a 36 on her ACT better not get rejected by Harvard in lieu of Ketanji Brown Jackson’s daughter who lived in Georgetown, went to Exeter and got a 30 on her ACT.

Changing my DNR status to allow resuscitation only if doctors and nurses are diverse.

Yeah this is one area where "best qualified" pretty much trumps everything else...

As long as race is not asked about, it would meet this standard. My question is how are the adversity factors weighted? What are the factors?

quote:

For the reasons provided above, the Harvard and UNC admissions programs cannot be reconciled with the guaran- tees of the Equal Protection Clause. Both programs lack sufficiently focused and measurable objectives warranting the use of race, unavoidably employ race in a negative man- ner, involve racial stereotyping, and lack meaningful end points. We have never permitted admissions programs to work in that way, and we will not do so today. At the same time, as all parties agree, nothing in this opinion should be construed as prohibiting universities from considering an applicant’s discussion of how race af- fected his or her life, be it through discrimination, inspira- tion, or otherwise. See, e.g., 4 App. in No. 21–707, at 1725– 1726, 1741; Tr. of Oral Arg. in No. 20–1199, at 10. But, despite the dissent’s assertion to the contrary, universities may not simply establish through application essays or other means the regime we hold unlawful today. (A dissent- ing opinion is generally not the best source of legal advice on how to comply with the majority opinion.) “[W]hat can- not be done directly cannot be done indirectly. The Constitution deals with substance, not shadows,” and the prohibition against racial discrimination is “levelled at the thing, not the name”

If they use this approach, I would tell any kid to just lie their arse off. How can they prove you didn’t grow up poor in an orphanage with no formal education?

If they truly want fairness, all indicators of race would be removed from the application. The top applicants are accepted and everyone is surprised as to the diversity or lack thereof at orientation.

What about the white kid from an upper income family who has a 1500 SAT and graduated from Deerfield (sorry, Exeter sucks, lol) in the top 5% of his class?

Overcoming adversity is nice and all but we are assigning some weird aspect of nobility to poverty that we really shouldn’t.

You better believe that a lot of rich minorities can still wax poetic about how much racism & adversity they face on a daily basis.

So now people are going to start exaggerating every negative thing that’s happened to them in hopes of getting a scholarship. The more pitiful you sound, the more money you get. We can focus on sympathy, not excellence. It’s more fair than using race, but it still won’t help us to not be taken over by China or whoever else.

Another thing from the left I don’t get.

Don’t trust doctors, they are racist, more negative outcomes for blacks and Hispanics.

Hey blacks and Hispanics, line up and get jabbed by white doctors.

Being impoverished in America is more likely because you are a lazy drug addict.
