I see a majority of people saying we need new blood in office on both sides of the "isle". I agree with this but have yet to see the change. On the Rep. side you have the tea party which defeated Cantor and might unseat Thad next week. What is the party/faction on the Dem side?

While most say we need new blood the Dems and Reps really hate the tea party. I don't, but at the same time do, understand why. They say "new blood" is needed and the tea party would be "new blood" but obviously not the right kind of blood. But how do you know its not the right kind of blood, its never been in power so it might just be what we/you need. But I guess it goes back to the devil you know is better than the Saint or Devil you don't know.

What would it take to actually kick everyone out of Congress? I'm all about term limits.

Everyone hates someone else's incumbent.

That is the root of the problem IMO.

Congress is fairly incompetent with the deep bench of lawyers and whores who already occupy the chambers. I don't see rookies improving upon that.

We have them. They're called elections.

It is not the incumbents.

Look into professional staffers. That will tell you where the real problem is.

People always think their Congressman is great, its all the other ones that suck. That's why incumbents usually win. I'd be surprised to a major turnover, especially in the Senate.

Yes we have the opportunity to elect someone new each election. But as we have seen time and time again once elected the "machine" goes to work for you and it is hard (not impossible) to unseat the incumbent.

If they were all rookies it might help get rid of the cronyism. Doubtful it would but it might help.

I see a lot of people touting third party, be it green, libertarian, tea ect but most are going to vote against someone rather than for someone. What would it take for the masses to leave the Dem and Rep to vote third party whatever that party might be?

Our system is legally constructed to support two parties. I don't hate it, so it spares me the need to play at rage every couple of years.

It isn't really ideal, though.

Watch the movie "The Distinguished Gentleman" with Eddie Murphy.

Focus on the role of the professional staffers. Incumbents come and go. They are the continuity (for both good and ill). They make congress work (again, for good and ill).

Staffers don't stick around. They are a bunch of 20-something's that end up working for the lobbyists when they leave. I can't remember the article but I believe that the janitors were making more than them.

I understand that the system is set up for two parties and a third is f'ed at this point. Going back in history we had other parties, such as the Wig party. I did not research them (I know google is my friend, but I'm not doing it now)but did they just go away or assimilate/morph into one of the two current controlling parties?

As you pointed out we have term limits every election. At this point with our current political scene it will take we the people to bring about a new third party to power. Obviously this would take one of the existing two power parties out. I believe that both parties are in cahoots to make sure neither gets brought down which makes third party hard to elect.

Still, I ask, what would it take to get Dems and Reps to stop voting against the other party and fully support a third party candidate?

Single issue voters will never agree.

Beyond wrong. The professional staffers remain on Capitol Hill moving from incumbent to incumbent. It is not about pay, but about power (and they are the ones who hold it). The types of staffers you are referring to are those that accompany a newly elected candidate to Washington DC. If they are good then they will eventually become professional staffers. You cannot get anywhere on Capitol Hill without seasoned, professional staffers. There are a certain amount permitted per committee, per actual representative/senator, and then they have those that are back at home. Their budget is very tightly controlled (hence the low pay). You honestly have no idea. Spend a day on Capitol Hill. It will frighten you how much influence they weild behind the scenes.

Good article from Slate;
