But confederate monuments did get mentioned. Not by the pastor but by a black lady guest in our "small groups" (bible study). She had a head covering and I'm assuming is from the Caribbean based on her accent. We were discussing our annual end of summer meet up for a picnic, laser show, kids playing at Stone Mountain. Afterwards she asked the group, timidly, why "people wanted to take down our monuments?" She went on to say that she loved Stone Mountain and thought the idea of tearing down statues was "scary". This is a Southern Baptist Church and she was the only Black person in our group. The church has few Black members. No one reacted or said much at all. It was kind of uncomfortable. Our study leader turned the convo back to organizing the meet up. The lady was very nice and very involved in all discussions ( it was psalm 141). I hope she returns and leaves political discussions for other times.

I tell all this to ask a question:
Are politics discussed at your church? I would be uncomfortable talking about such things there. The other thread led me to wonder if people actually get into such things at church.

She's not the only black person at church, but it isn't representative of the community either. There are probably 10-15% of those who attend regularly who are black. The local community is 40%. I

My priest did for the first time ever today. We are Episcopalian. When he said "White privilage" I wanted to leave the church, except I was the reader and had yet to read the prayers to the people. It bothered be me because I go to church to receive the word of God and expect a certain level of humilty, but not to be made to feel guilty for something I've never done.

A black pastor from New Orleans, Fred Luter, was head of the convention from 2012-2014.

the fact we are in church and are uncomfortable with a question because the person is "black" says more to what we are learning from God's teachings than anything else.

red, brown, yellow, black and white they are precious in his sight.

we are all people who were given a physical vehicle to drive for our lifetime,of which we had no choice, and because our neighbors vehicle isn't the the same model as ours doesn't make make us different.

look into our neighbors eyes to see who they are,not their skin.

Except I didn't say it was uncomfortable because she was black. I will admit that discussing such issue with black people makes me uncomfortable though. I think that's a fairly natural thing as I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, especially at church. Fwiw..I disagree with her on the statues and would likely be the only one in class that feels that way.

I thought the whole point of church was to drill into our heads how bad we are etc..?

Our plaster is a liberal. I know this. That's fine.

I cringe when he injects politics into his sermon. CRINGE. even though he tries to do it in a neutral sometimes funny way.

I guess if you are indeed a bad person that would be the point in you going...

My pastor preaches through the books of the Bible so no, not really. The texts lead the teaching, not current events.

According to the Bible who isn't a bad person? I thought we were all sinners?

No. The closest thing to politics had to do with immigration (5-6 years ago). We have a healthy Hispanic membership. So, it was more financial than political.
