Reeves vetoes $50M for improvements to UMMC adult hospital
quote:
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves says he is vetoing taxpayer money that was earmarked to go to expanding LeFleur’s Bluff--money that would have gone toward adding a golf course. The LeFleur’s Bluff Complex is the shared campus between the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks’ (MDWFP) Museum of Natural Science and the Mississippi Children’s Museum. The $13.2 million for the project would have come from capital expense funds and had support from Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann, House Speaker Philip Gunn and Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, among others. Reeves made the announcement at a Thursday press conference where he discussed upcoming plans on infrastructure investments for the state--namely roads, water and sewer.

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves vetoed two major funding projects that would go toward improvements in Downtown Jackson. Reeves said he is vetoing $1 million for the Jackson Convention Center to build a parking lot, and another $2 million toward the Russell C. Davis Planetarium. The vetoes were announced Thursday as the governor discussed upcoming plans on infrastructure investments for the state--namely roads, water and sewer. While announcing money that was being spent on infrastructure, Reeves also listed a number of projects he’s vetoing, which he called “inappropriate” ways to spend taxpayer money.
Reeves vetoes $50M for improvements to UMMC adult hospital
quote:
"It is my view, over what we have seen over the last several years, that the number of beds available in our state has not been an issue. The inability for our hospitals to staff those beds has been the issue," Reeves said Wednesday. "Let's be honest. The University of Mississippi Medical Center, they compete with hospitals in this region. They compete with hospitals for staff. They also compete with them for patients." UMMC leaders declined to comment Wednesday. Legislators specified the $50 million would come from Mississippi’s pandemic recovery money from the federal government.

Ole Tater is easy to dislike as a career politician, but he's been winning me over with some sound conservative actions here lately. I might be starting to like him.
I'll still refer to him as Tater Tot

This seems like a good move on the surface.
Seems like a move a lot of pols aren't willing to make.
ETA: This isn't necessarily on topic for the thread, but it pertains to the state of Mississippi. A while back there were policies put in that started to have very positive impact on the education system in the state. Has that kept up? Are those policies still in place?
I know my question is vague, it's because I don't remember all the details. I'm hoping a fine upstanding citizen of the Landmass can educate me.

We just cant have nice things. We have had huge stimulus bills over the past ten years that should have gone to fix a lot of infrastructure, especially in Jackson. Where dat go?

Not an educator so others could tell a better response but yes there were incredible improvements in the reading scores.
But Covid and isolation and “home schooling” due to schools being closed/virtual I think will sadly regress/stunt any achievements in that area and that’s a shame as they were making real progress

Tater has far exceeded my expectations
He is better than Bryant and Barbour by far.

It already has a golf course. And I thought we were moving the zoo there.

I would not go that far, Bryant moved this state leaps and bounds for what it is.
