and an additional 31% of counties had one. The county I live in had one last year. A gay lover's quarrel. But is represented on this map as 1.

So 19% of the counties in the USA had 2 or more murders. Here's a map for you.

Hmmm...seems to be a pretty strong correlation between bluer areas and murders...

Any chance we can get a gif that goes between this map and the 2016 voting map?

Must have some really draconian gun control policies in Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho.

Crime is pretty clearly a symptom of urbanization. I'm not sure anyone would disagree with that.

I never understand why people compare County statistics for these things, when the population and population densities make the comparisons irrelevant, unless they are accounted for.

For example, Kalawao County, Hawaii has 88 people (least populated county), while Los Angeles County, California 10,137,915 (most populated county). So one murder in Kalawao County would be like 115,204 murders in LA County.

So how does one draw any inferences from this information when these population differences aren't accounted for?

County-level comparisons aren’t the best. But, it’s a hell of a lot better resolution than state-wide stats gun-banners love to tout.

You can have a handful of counties with strict gun laws that account for the majority of murder in a state. If the state has reasonable gun laws... the banners will blame the state’s “lax gun laws”—even though most the state has very low murder rates. It’s a tired old trick a certain poster here has fallen far deeply.
