This is a perfect example.

quote:

Single mother Kiarre Harris started researching homeschooling last November. She says her two elementary school aged children weren't excelling at their failing Buffalo Public Schools. "I felt that the district was failing my children and that's when I made the decision to homeschool," she said.

quote:

Harris says she filed documents at Buffalo City Hall, following all the steps, informing the district of her intent to homeschool her children. According to documents she provided to 7 Eyewitness News, they're dated December 7th and the district says it received her paperwork. "I spoke directly to the homeschool coordinator and she told me from this point on my children were officially un-enrolled from school."

So all paperwork in and filed.

quote:

Things took a turn when she says a week later, Child Protective Services called, wondering why her kids weren't in school. "I told them that my kids were homeschooled now and that I could furnish the documents if they need to see them."

quote:

less than a month later she says she was confronted by CPS workers and police. According to Harris, they told her they had a court order to take her children and when she told them no, she was arrested for obstruction. She says she hasn't seen her kids in three weeks, and they've been in a foster institution.

Basically, the issue is the federal gov feels it has more rights over your kids than you do.

Holy frick.

That lady should win a massive law suit. The government wrongfully takes your kids for weeks and puts them in foster care? Are you fricking kidding? I would lose my shite.

What part of this implicated the Feds?

Seems like idiotic CPS/local government.

Not really. Horror stories like these come out of CPS all the time.

What?

From your quotes the Buffalo Public School system (local) contacted CPS (State) because of incompetence in at Buffalo city hall.

Where are the Feds involved at all here?

Kids are homeschooled all over this country every day without any problem.

Mountain out of molehill.

if kids are home schooled, they can't be indoctrinated by liberal, marxist teachers

Yeah, really. The state can't comment on any of this, so you're getting her side of the story. This is a protective plan, which means there had to be an indication of abuse, and signed off by a judge. There is way more to this story.

They are trying to say she doesn't have full custody. She says she does.

That is the story

The Buffalo Public School District says it cannot comment on this case due to Federal Laws but says in order for a parent to file for homeschooling, they must have full custody of the children.

Harris says she's a single parent and has always had full custody until her kids were taken away.

Sounds like there could be a bitter ex involved?

Custody is also not a federal issue.

I'm pretty sure that even if you homeschool you still have to show proof that you are in fact following some sort of curriculum.

This sounds more plausible than the state coming in and taking the kids for a simple misunderstanding (especially when she had the paperwork to back it up).

There's more to this story.

This link shows the paper work and the official stamp.

quote:

Harris had never previously been arrested or charged with a crime.

quote:

Buffalo City Hall never notified her children’s former school that the kids were no longer enrolled, which prompted the school to contact Child Protective Services for excessive absences.

That prompted the CPS to look for things to bring a case.

quote:

nvestigators took the time to comb through Harris’ social media posts to build a flimsy case of child neglect against her, but apparently didn’t bother to call City Hall to confirm her story.

She has those docs too.

She is quoting them:

quote:

“’Respondent recently posted a comment on social media ridiculing the school system and people who attend school or graduate from school,’”

That's actually part of the CPS case. Ridiculing the school system...

quote:

“First and foremost, I’m a high school graduate and a college graduate, so would it make sense for me to ridicule someone who goes to school? No. What I posted was that the school teaches people to be ‘smart idiots,’ people who cannot think outside of the box,” Harris explained. “They can think in the form of text book, what they’ve been taught, but they cannot think for themselves. … Which is actually very true.”

quote:

“This should not have happened. Someone along the way, anywhere in the process after Dec. 7, should have simply said ‘Wait a minute, CPS should not be in here,’ the principal should have been circled back to and (told) these students were unenrolled,” said Franklin Redd, representative from the District Parent Coordinating Council.

Doesn't seem to be. The above post is, according to court docs, what happened. Somebody dropped the ball. Then CPS decided to dig to find anything they could to get the kids.

If her story is true she will have enough money to start her own private school.

But regardless of where the truth lies, your OP regarding the federal government was irrelevant to the story.
