A Mississippi school named after Confederate leader Jefferson Davis is changing its name to honor former President Barack Obama, The Clarion-Ledger reports.
The newspaper reports Davis Magnet International Baccalaureate World School is in Jackson, Miss, and is a predominantly black public elementary school. The president of the school's Parent-Teacher Association told the Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees on Tuesday night (Oct. 17) that "school stakeholders" voted to change the school's name to Barack Obama Magnet IB. The report did not say who the stakeholders were.

I don't recall a Confederate leader with that name.

I have no problem with this name change. Neighborhoods change over time and if those who live there want to do so fine.
The reverse is true regarding the gentrification of areas previously black.

I don't ever recall MLK Ave being changed to George Bush Ave.

Go ahead ... sure, that'll make Jackson, MS, not suck shite.

Those that were previously 'black' were only that way since the 60's. But for the 100 or so years prior, they were 'white'

This will certainly cause the fine town of Jackson to do a 180

No problem with school name changes in general. Honestly I can see a lot of schools getting named after Obama and frankly that's appropriate.
However a general rule, I think name changes should wait until after the person they are going to be named after is dead.
You just never know.

I guess we will never see a Harvey Weinstein school.

Maybe, just maybe, a massage parlor, but surely not a school.

MLK wasn't a traitor to the United States.
Not sure why all the Confederate defenders seem to ignore that inconvenient fact.
It's not like we go around naming places after Benedict Arnold.
