My DIL is a Mexican. She explained it very simply.

Actually, a little less than I expected. The latest wall estimates are $70 billion to build (including buying the land) and $150 million annually in maintenance.
But $150 million in border security would make huge impact, and leave the wall money to start a ton of infrastructure projects and jobs Nationwide.
Seems considering how fricked up Louisiana's bridges and roads are, they could really use all the federal funding help they can get. Especially since none of that gas tax will go to an increased dotd budget. Louisiana fixed a few things with their 1\2 cent gas tax years ago. But there's a ton of bridges and roads that still need repair. Just the bridges around there need paint incredibly bad.
