Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has spelled out a series of demands from the U.S. ranging from visas to a multi-billion infusion of funds – even as the Biden administration seeks to pressure Mexico to do more on its part to address the migrant crisis.

He wants the U.S. to deploy $20 billion plan to help Mexico and Central American countries dealing with the root causes of migration – while also calling for wholesale changes in U.S.-Cuba policy.

We also want something done about the (U.S.) differences with Cuba,' López Obrador said. 'We have already proposed to President Biden that a U.S.-Cuba bilateral dialogue be opened,' he said in remarks at a Friday press conference.

Lopez Obrador also said he wants the U.S. to provide visas to at least 10 million Hispanic migrants who have been living in the U.S. for 10 years or longer.

His long list of demands come even as the Biden administration is asking Mexico to do more, as a surge of migrants continue to flow across the border. It also comes at a time when the Biden administration needs to show progress on the issue while getting hammered by Republican rivals and even some prominent Democratic mayors on the costs and social impacts of the surge.

Border encounters hit another stunning milestone in December with 300,000
apprehensions.

It is long past time that we tell Mexico to go frick itself.

What a shithole country that has never once had effective governance in its entire history.

The easiest answer is, Remain in Mexico is the best way to stop the flow into the US, and we need Mexico on board (again) to do that.

How about "no", though I'm sure Biden will send the money as soon as he is promised his 10%.

Educate me on why we need anything whatsoever from Mexico in order to prevent people from crossing into the US.

Don’t tell me that we have to compensate for our deliberate choices to not enforce our laws by asking Mexican nicely. Tell me why there’s an inherent need for Mexican cooperation.

Because if we simply secured our own border, this becomes Mexico’s problem. Quickly.

You talking a wall or what?

RIM "secures the border" better than that.

Eh, "our laws" are why they get to stay here. They're smart enough to claim asylum, knowing that our courts are backed up. Our laws require due process for asylum claims.

The easiest answer would have been shoot the frickers climbing over the wall. shite would have put a stop to this a long time ago.

But dumb voters like you exist.

Physical barriers are a large part of the solution, yes. But most illegal entries are still coming through ports/points of entry, so no a wall is not the only piece of securing the border.

Eh, "our laws" are why they get to stay here.

If we enforced the physical integrity of the border, they would never get here in order to avail themselves of our laws.

What percentage of illegal crossers would you say are asylum applicants? Because I was under the impression that it’s a very small number. Could be wrong though.

Point being that it’s the most porous border in the world because politicians want it to be. Not because we “just can’t secure it”. No. We’re simply choosing not to.

Actually the only legal constitutional job and duty of our military is to defend our own border. Which they’ve obviously not done

Well it's a good thing this isn't a military operation. How would they have jurisdiction over a civil issue, exactly?

The only provision of their shitty constitution that prevents Mexico from descending into its natural state as a military authoritarian state like the rest of its shitty Latin American brothers.

Bringing us back to the fact that if we just simply prioritized security and preventing illegal crossings, this problem becomes Mexico’s.

I have yet to hear a politically coherent answer for why the US should ever tolerate one single illegal entrant. It CAN be prevented.
