That fat arse piece of shite needs to make good on Germany's commitment immediately. frick NATO. Russia can have that entire side of the world. We can't keep propping up every little government and spending trillions to act as the world police. Pay for your own defense or crumble. I don't want my tax dollars being used to keep some sniveling little Euro bitch free to drive a Fiat and scream about how rednecks are such backwards people.

Europeans have to be the weakest group of people on the planet.

According to the NATO agreement, yes.

It's one of the reasons that these counties can spend so much money on social services, the U.S. effectively pays for their defense. That shite ain't cheap.

Anyone know the "penalty" for not meeting your defense spending obligations set out in the treaty?

CAn't we just call out those that are in violation and point to the reprecussions and be all like .

it must be nice to be able to provide for your nation's defense without having to pay for it.

If their was a penalty I think we would have heard about it by now, given the fact that so many NATO counties fail to meet their financial obligations and NATO has been around for like 58 years.

And of all f'n counties, Greece, f'n Greece, financial failing Greece meets their financial obligations.

Trump the businessman looks at NATO solely as a balance sheet. What he doesn't see is that countries can offset their shortcomings with regard to the budget in other areas (for example, putting more troops toward NATO missions).

Is that spelled out in the treaty as a legit alternative for the 2%? If not, nice try.

If we're going for strict letter of the law, is Trump going to war with Russia in Ukraine? Because we agreed to defend their territorial integrity in exchange for Ukraine getting rid of their nukes.

Why wouldn't the cost of those defense assets show up on the NATO "balance sheet"?

I'm sure if Merkel said, "Look Trump, I know we only contribute 1.19% of our GDP to NATO, however we do commit these additional assets that are a cost to Germany and do not show up on the NATO 'balance sheet'" he would easily understand that kind of situation.

If this is really the case Merkel needs to speak up.

To piggy back.... If that stipulation IS in fact in the treaty as an alternative for the 2%, then can you provide evidence that those nations who fell short of their 2%, produced "offset" their budget duties? Seems to me that the example provided of providing more troops for NATO missions, isn't very measurable.

Greece is highly, highly nationalistic. And they have their mortal enemy with whom they've fought a war just a generation ago right next door to them.

And the Trump Administration will do everything it can to see Germany meet NATO obligations by 2018.

I have mixed feelings about Germany drastically increasing its military spending. The last time they did that it didn't end well....
