Two men caught having sex in the Indonesian province of Aceh were subject to a public caning today, in a punishment widely criticised by human rights groups.
quote:

The men, aged 20 and 23, were allegedly having sex in a house in Aceh on March 28 when a group of vigilante enforcers entered the dwelling and filmed them. The men were sentenced to 85 lashes each last week. According to Human Rights Watch, they received 83 lashes on Tuesday, with two subtracted for the two months they spent in detention. The public caning took place outside a mosque in the provincial capital, Banda Aceh. Hundreds of people turned up to watch the punishments being meted out to the two men and other Indonesians convicted of different offences. Aceh has a special legal status allowing it to insert Sharia bylaws into the criminal code. In the province, ordinances criminalising drinking alcohol, sex outside of marriage and gay sex can be enforced against Muslims and non-Muslims. Andreas Harsono, a researcher with Human Rights Watch, told BuzzFeed News: “Today is a historical day, not only in Aceh, but also in Indonesia. This is the first time that gay sex is being punished with caning, to be precise – with torture, in public. It’s the first time in the modern history of South East Asia to have caning for gay sex.”
I know Aceh is an outlier in Indonesia, but still - if this bulwark isn't held...if Indonesia is allowed to completely turn, then dark days ahead. LINK

That seems close to a death sentence. Horrible.

They should be thankful that they didn't get thrown off of a roof.

Sharia law is the biggest bunch of horse crap, and the people who practice it are a scourge to humanity.

I don't really fear it (especially not on a daily basis) - I just recognize it for what it is...a blight across the entire face of the earth. And I've been sick and tired for years of the mainstream obscurantists pretending as if it's something it isn't. It is not the same as the other major faiths of the world. It is an explicitly all-encompassing, political virus. American politicians need to start treating it as such - even Trump, who nominally criticized it during the campaign, is spewing nothing but silly platitudes even as he welcomes to the bosom the single greatest supporter of terrorism over the past 30 years. Ditto GWB and his cowardly response to the Danish cartoon "controversy".

It is. Forty lashes was generally considered the maximum point that humans could endure. Anything beyond that could result in death depending on the individual. 83 lashes will result in massive blood and tissue loss. 83 is essentially a death sentence.

Additionally:

And why is Indonesia not allowed to have a different system of values, beliefs, laws, customs? By what moral superiority assertion is anyone claiming to know better than Indonesians how to live in that sovereign nation?

If the 2 gays don't want to abide by those laws, values, cultural norms, there is a whole lot more of this planet for them to seek an acceptable space to live in. If they choose to remain, then they choose to either obey the rules or accept the results of failing to meet expectations of that culture.

Last I checked, we in the USA choose OUR way of life and do NOT vote on the rules, conduct, values, beliefs of any other sovereign nation. From the reporting in this article: Want have gay sex? Avoid Indonesia, with the caveat of: unless one also enjoys public caning following their gay sex.

Granted, Aceh is a pretty small part of Indonesia, and has a long history of Islamic independence movements.

Indonesia is 87% Muslim. It has been lost for a long time.

It is also where the jug-eared Muslim we just got out of the White House spent his formative years. Now you know where he got his value system.

You're not doing this right. But you are playing the progressive role correctly.

At least they only got 83 instead of 85 due to the detention

Reminds me of junior high when we got in trouble. You had a choice:

In school suspension where you got locked in a closet alone all day and received a 0 on any tests that day

Or you got 6 paddlings. Administered by a male headmaster with a thick wooden paddle, rubber grip handle, and holes drilled to reduce wind resistance

Yes, but it's brand of Islam has traditionally generally been of the moderate variety. Salafism is gaining ground there.
