Used to get paddled at school and had to carry home the pink slip to get signed so I then got whipped with the belt.

Football coach gave out hits for D's and F's, but never had to worry about that because I never made bad grades.

I'm really not of that mindset. But the assumption when a cop fires his weapon is that his life is in danger, or the lives of other citizens are in danger. The teacher's life was not in danger. No other student's lives were in danger. And his behavior after the student was on the ground shows that the teacher had lost control of himself. So my view is that the teacher lost control of himself and severely overreacted.

You are making an assumption here

Fair point

Are you saying the teacher's actions were justified?
It seems like it if the kid truly hit him first.

The slap at the end when the kid was on the ground was no big deal imo. Add in the kid’s actions and words after it’s over and I’m 1000% ok with the kid getting his arse beat and I’d be fine with it if the kid was my son.

He was in control

More parents need to have this attitude. I suspect that the type of person who would say their kid FAFO here also raised their kid to understand that if they put hands on a teacher whatever they got would be nothing compared to what's coming when they got home.

^ is why kids are sometimes stupid.

Did he forget this part?

Yes. One or two teachers in a school that can kick arse when needed. The punks will settle down or move on to where they don’t get their arse kicked.

I can remember hearing the principal's paddle smackin' that a$$ from down the hall and she liked it. But for everyone else in school, you DID NOT want to go to the principals office. So 2 to 3 times a year, the student body in class could hear the spankings.

But it only took 2 to 3 paddlings and the entire student body behaved no matter how much she liked it.

Personally, I think you’ve made reasonable and rational points on this matter.

...or just do away with the "zero tolerance" policy for fist-fights between students.

Just a strong black man trying to teach a young black man how to act. Nothing to see here.

haven't made any assertions, initial or otherwise.

You absolutely did by suggesting the teacher threw punches over a word, but you were shown that the altercation took place once the student put his hands on the teacher. Your initial assertion was incorrect.

The rest is up for discussion on the rest of it, but you did make an assertion initially sir. You can try to deny it but you would be wrong.

They would take us to the gym, make us put on gloves and head gear and tell us to get it out of our system. It worked brilliantly.

For some reason, the current status has School Board Officials and School Administrators making huge, I mean huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge salaries for systems that are failing the students terribly.

Something has to change quickly!! Even our elected officials have become a mirror of our education system.

The article says the teacher fought the student over a word. That wasn't just my assertion

The teacher alleges the student put hands on him. That hasn't been confirmed by anyone else yet and it's not evident from the video that has been made public. Also, we don't know what "put hands on him" means. Did he hit the teacher? Shove him? Touch him? If we find out that the student hit the teacher first, then my thoughts would be different. For now we don't know that.

I'm not saying he can't touch the kid at all. Maybe get the kid in a bear hug. But he punched the student several times and even hit him when he was on the ground and the threat was over.

Both of these can get you fired.

Teachers are bailing because some kids (SPED) are basically untouchable.

We’d “No child left behind” is the Obamacare version of education. Hot garbage!

I'm inclined to think everything went well until this bit. I don't mind a teacher getting physical if a student does, but when the student is no longer a threat the teacher needs to back off.
