The costs of Hasan’s initial trial at FT Hood cost nearly $5 Million. His case has been active on appellate review since 2013, and estimates are when his appeals are exhausted (probably another 10 years), the DOD will have spent nearly $35 Million on providing him a free defense.

Hassan wanted to plead guilty to murder, but Army prosecutors (rightfully) sought the death penalty. Our judicial system won’t let a defendant plead guilty to a capital case and accept a death sentence without being found guilty at a contested jury trial (which also requires a unanimous verdict, different from regular courts-martial).

Being charged with a capital offense also means the defendant is entitled to specialized lawyers who have experience with the death penalty and mitigation. They charge tens of thousands of dollars for their work.

Perhaps we should have let him plead guilty to murder, given him life without parole, and kept him in reserve in prison unless/until we ever need to trade him to a Muslim country in exchange for an American journalist, hostage, etc.

That’s what Israel does with their high-value Arab prisoners.

He's in the military and attacked fellow soldiers, he could and should have been court martialed and shot within days of the attack.

This is testimony to the corrupted nature of our legal system. It's about the money in the legal rackets.

If the military at Ft. Hood had been allowed to be armed, dude would have been shot dead.
What a missed opportunity for a straightforward solution.

Or we could have let him plead guilty and put him in a military cell block.

Someone who killed a bunch of servicemen isn’t going to have a long life expectancy under such conditions.

US annual Defense Budget @860 Billion.

All these things add up and as most government people know, if you don't spend it, you can't ask for additional funds the next year.

It's all a scam.

BTW Out biggest adversary, China, spends 277 billion annually. Even taking into effect the yuan is artificially devalued, the amount we budget is astronomical compared everyone else. We are getting scammed by the DOD. China would have saved 35 million + by slitting the throat and making the Uyghurs dig the hole for free.

He committed this act during a declared time of war. This wasn't a crime, this was a terrorist attack and the absolute definition of Treason. He should have been tried and shot or hung in accordance with UCMJ. Period.

Politics got involved.

The Obama administration declared this as “workplace violence” instead of terrorism.

I'm no lawyer, but one thing I am absolutely sure of..... That traitorous frick isn't worth one bullet, much less 35 million of our tax dollars.
We're so fricked as a country, in many ways. Any system which allows for this is doomed. No way it can sustain. Idiocy and waste.
