Instead, the most eye-catching parts of his speech concerned security and defense, where he proposed a far-reaching agenda to secure the EU’s external borders,

Macron is quickly becoming the most competent leader in Western Europe.

I must say I'm pleasantly surprised

I'm also surprised with how closely his policies are starting to align with Trump's, as are a couple Parisian friends of mine.

Macron sounds like he understands the refugee system put in place during the post-War period isn't working any longer. That system has been on the verge of breaking, in earnest, since 1991, and 2015 finally broke it.

quote:

The EU is now engaged in the delicate task of “trying to put the porcelain back together,” in the words of one senior EU diplomat. The first task is to do whatever necessary to secure EU borders: The closure of the Southern Balkan route was the result of an EU deal with Turkey; the recent success in closing the central Mediterranean route is the result of deals struck by Italy with Libyan militias. The exact nature of these deals is unclear.

Mr. Macron’s ideas—which built on proposals laid out by commission president, Jean-Claude Juncker, in a speech earlier in September—for an enhanced EU border force, swifter returns of failed asylum seekers, an EU budget to fund support for asylum seekers, and deeper engagement with the countries from which migrants are coming could all help to rebuild public trust.

This all points to the fact that there needs to be a new system put in place.
