Coming Monday, we have a new Republican governor getting ready to make his mark on the legislature and the state with a special session.

Of the items on the agenda-
Death penalty
Conceal carry
Penalties for car jacking
Restricting parole
Limiting liability for law enforcement
Publicizing juvenile court records

Some of this is good stuff. Some is fluff. Some of it could easily be handled in a regular session.

There’s a glaring omission though.
Why has newly elected Republican governor omitted TORT REFORM in his special session request? It’s a glaring issue. Our insurance prices are out of control. Companies are relocating to other states to help stem their auto insurance costs.

Landry knows this. He puts together a laundry list of items to address in a special session yet ignores one of the most important issues facing our state. Something smells.

What happened to the tort reform implemented three years ago?

Bro tort reform in Louisiana?

Trial lawyers aren’t a cottage industry there, they are part of the fabric of life in the state.

Landry will not push for any significant tort reform. Agreement has been reached. LTLA doing work!

Tort Reform
Tort reform would be fantastic. Neither Louisiana, nor any other state, has done tort reform. They've done tort tweeks and across the board award caps. Meanwhile, system expense remains.

Gordon just announced another office building. It seems he is running out of room for his 220 employees. We don’t need tort reform.

The law of torts dates back generations and is enshrined in virtually every Western legal system

That's too big a fish to fry in a special session.

Fine. Now compare the "Western legal system of torts" in Denmark with the shite system here.

I can actually accept this as a reasonable response.
I hope we see something done in the regular session.
I have my doubts tho

One of those things is not like the other.

It is a session focused on crime. Let it be about crime.

Now IF he doesn't address insurance (including tort reform) in the regular session, then you have a legit gripe.

Everything all at once is a good movie, it is a crappy legislative strategy.

are you serious? Landry was supported by the injury attorneys since early on in his campaign. Did you not watch the debates? The other Republican candidates constantly brought up tort reform and insurance costs in attempt to bring down Landry. It didn't work. Landry had by far the most campaign money.
The injury attorneys aren't stupid. Their endorsements and campaign contributions are not bound by party lines. JBE was their guy and now Landry is their guy. This state is screwed.

Yup. They were a little more quiet leading up to the past election but you are correct, Landry is their guy.

Welp

If this is true then we are truly screwed as a state

The insurance industry is not going to take us seriously if we have this run away legal environment where people get 10plus mil for an auto accident.

Landry pulled the wool over the voters of Louisiana, again, just a different name and face.

Taking a line from a Clint Eastwood movie, 'Whupped 'em again didn't we Josey?'

Take a little informal survey as you drive to your job every day.

How many 'lawyer' signs do you see on your daily drive?

My 6 month car insurance (for 2 cars) just went up $80. That would be $160 a year. I have had zero accidents in my life where my insurance had to pay. My agent explained the problem: 'You live in La. Most car insurance companies are leaving.'
