Louisiana politics at its finest, LSMSA

My brother graduated from LSMSA in Nacitoches. There is a bill moving through the legislature, SB1, to rename the school after Jimmy Long. His brother Gerald is politicking his tail off to get the bill passed despite a healthy opposition from alumni.
Yesterday in a house education committee meeting Long essentially told the sitting committee members if they didn't pass this bill he'd kill bills they send to the senate. There was a large constituency there from the school, alumni, students, parents and faculty. They sent hundreds of emails and made lots of phone calls.
Given an opportunity to support their constituents and kill the bill, or to name the new dormitory being built on campus after senator Long the house chose politics over the people. The bill passed 5-2 and will go to the house for a vote.
Yet another example of the politicians doing what they choose and ignoring the voters wishes.

The costs of renaming the school is going to be expensive at a time when we have a so called budget shortfall. It's not needed and one reason I will never vote for a tax of fee in this state.

Yeah I watched the debate (well most of it, it was long).
In the end the committee overruled the wishes of the faculty, staff, current students, parents and alumni to do what legislators do best, honor their own.
It was sad. And you are right, there was some clear arm-twisting going on as Katrina Jackson, who had nothing to do with the bill, came in as they were about to vote and made a show of how she was taking a tally of how people voted. Disgusting.
According to the testimony the Alumni give half a million a year to the school. That is pretty impressive when you consider that it's a high school (that doesn't have an athletic program).
I would not be surprised if those alumni choose to use their money elsewhere. Like say donations to political candidates that will actually support the school.

I didn't watch but folllowed it off and on throughout the day. The alum are pretty pissed.
I'm a little surprised they only get half a million a year with the annual fundraiser and the growing alum base.
Hopefully they continue to support the school

I've been wanting to post this on this board for a while, but as a graduate of LSMSA in the thick of this fight, I thought best to stay away.
I am absolutely disgusted by the politicians in this state, especially Francis Thompson and Gerald Long.
They are both bald-faced liars and political hacks. This is nothing more than sheer grandstanding on their part, and their dismissal of the alumni and the opposition was farcical.
I take personal affront at the actions of the so-called representatives on the education committee who voted in favor of the bill in the face of Long's threats, and I am especially disappointed in Chris Broadwater, who to great lengths to ignore his constituents to help Thompson and Long.
I am absolutely disgusted by the politicians in this state, especially Francis Thompson and Gerald Long.

Long I give a pass. For his brother and the fact the has lost a lot in a short period. And he is term-limited.
Broadwater, I know and normally am very supportive of him. He was VERY disappointing. But not much to be done as he will probably run unopposed.
Francis Thompson. What can I say but frick him and his corrupt arse. He is term limited BUT has said he is going to switch and run for the House. A GREAT opportunity for supporters of LSMSA to fund whoever he runs against. Thompson said he has been in politics for over 40 years. That's long enough.
And would said a great message not to frick with the alumni.

Well I agree in the sense that legislators had better stuff to focus on.
If you mean the alumni should have just shut up and let it go through the legislature quickly to save money; I would vehemently disagree.

No that's not what I meant. I'm certain there were, are more important things to try and resolve. But that brings us back to scumbag politicians that are afraid to tackle real issues and instead pick the low hanging fruit to give the appearance of progress.
