I know this has been talked about before on this board, but just got my home insurance bill and it almost doubled. Got with my current insurance agent and she claims that there is nothing better out there right now. I've heard this from other people, but just checking to see if anyone here has found some decent rates or companies to shop.

It sucks and likely will only get worse.

Hurricanes have consequences.

Florida is suffering, too.

Nope, I am in the same area as you. Check out DJW insurance and Liggio. Let them shop it and hope for the best. Its stupid south of 10.

Previous insurance pulled out of the state entirely. The cheapest I could find was still nearly double what I was paying before.

Mine went up a little.

I got an unsolicited quote from Allstate in the mail for less than half of my current premium, with lower deductibles.....
But - when I got some damage from Rita the Allstate adjuster blamed the damages on uninsured causes, then the Company outright rejected the costs of repairs.
I should have joined the class action but did not.

I had no damage from Laura despite getting center of the eye.

What good is Allstate if they won't cover?

My agent told me to be very careful when I shopped around. Some brokers are quoting policies at lower rates from carriers with shitty ratings and are under water. My policy went up about 25% from what I was paying with UPC.

Pretty much this.

It is a ripple effect from a few bad storm seasons where we went from no storms making landfall here to quite a few of them doing so.

They have a governor and legislature actively working to try to rectify their situation, as I understand it.

I actually read about this last night (when I found out the Nola lawyer from the Houston firm got an emergency suspension) and I think even Donelon's letter (IIRC) states their issues are more litigious and our issues were under-funded insurers.

That's because it's stupid to live on a slab south of I-10, which a lot of people do.

Mine went up a little and then I got the lovely letter that they are leaving the state(UPC).

I knew that was coming so I had my agent already working on finding a replacement policy for me. So I got a rate increase for one month and then a "Hey we're outta here letter" this weekend.

It's cheaper if you own and don't have a mortgage correct?

It's as cheap as you want if you own it outright - including down to $0.00. It's just a matter of what risk you're willing to accept instead of what risk the lender is willing to accept.
