If anyone knows where poor whites went to school in BR and Alexandria back in the day I'd be interested to know.
I think Peabody is the traditional black school in the Alexandria area. Which became a magnet school to attract whites during the deseg days.

Baton Rouge Magnet is not elite. Episcopal of B.R. is better.

Elite schools don't need any friggin' ribbon. They know who they are. They produce National Merit Scholars (money) and get kids into Ivy League colleges.
Who do you think produces more National Merits yearly, Episcopal or BRMHS? I'm sure things have changed alot since your time when it comes to BR schools....

Statewide the elite schools are: Isidore Newman, Jesuit NO, Caddo Magnet, La School for MSA.
Ummm, Ben Frank??

They said that the standards had to be stripped away in order to let any kids within 2 miles(gitto) go there with no academic standards.
I went to BRMHS much later than you, but during my time there was absolutely no "neighborhood" component to BRMHS admissions.

Have you not been keeping up? It without a doubt is still elite. Especially compared to other schools in the area.

I was there during the supposed "drop off" of the late 90s, and my class still boasted more National Merit Scholars, students receiving AP credit, and Ivy League admissions than anyone in the state.
A lot of LA folks can't come to grips with the amount of money they wasted sending their kids to private schools in the south. It's not as though they spent those thousands on Lawrenceville, Deerfield, or Exeter.

How hard is it to be elite, when you gets to hand pick your students?
How does it feel to be retarded?

Wanna know how I can tell your parents thought you were too big of a sissy to make it in a neighborhood public school?

This was the same when I was there in the early 2000s. Besides that, I remember Mu Alpha Theta and other local/regional competitions where we would just dominate all the other schools, public and private (except Ben Frank )

And I get it if you can't get your child into BRMHS, because there aren't many other good public school options around. But if you can, jmo, I think private school is a total waste of money in BR.

Who GAF? I'm pretty sure most parents are more concerned about the quality of education rather than if their child has the "toughness" needed to make it at a neighborhood HS.

Fwiw, These are the US News Gold & Silver Schools:
1.Benjamin Franklin High School
2.Haynes Academy School For Advanced Stud
3.Lusher Charter School
4.Patrick F. Taylor Science & Technology
5.BRMHS
6.Thomas Jefferson High School in Gretna
7.Caddo Parish Magnet High School
8.Louisiana School For Math & Science
As for BRMHS it is 55% minority (42% black , 13% Asian, 45% white) and 62% female , 5th highest academic ranking in the State, 33% "economically disadvantaged", 98% proficiency in English, 100% proficiency in math, etc.
It's a beautiful building with a 12 acre campus, a really solid AP curriculum, no real discipline issues, leads the State most years in National Merit Scholars, has had four Rhodes Scholars and a Fulbright, Mu Alpha Theta has won State for like 17 years, has an outstanding performing arts program,is the only school in the country with an AM and FM student-run radio station, and has over 60 clubs. Plus I volunteer there which adds tremendous value.
I've been very happy with BRMHS and have never really met a parent who wasn't. I really don't get the criticism.

Yeah, Franklin is pretty much head and shoulders above the ones the OP mentioned.

Great post, Pimp!
Just let those who spend thousands a semester and think that means their child is getting a better education than BRMHS continue to hate

Newman (one of Zach's elite) cost $24.8k/year for incoming freshman into their high school in 2014.

I wasn't even using a "bang for your buck" argument, but for 24.8K I better be getting a whole lot more than just an "elite" education.

I think the Recovery School District was costing over $20k/yr per student at one point.
Posted on 3/30/14 at 6:56 pm to FalseProphet
I swiped that on a phone, and did not proofread. My 34 ACT score in English says STFU.

Good. I don't know about recent years. I know some of the best teachers retired soon after the "ruling," and my sister said it wasn't the same before and after. She was a sophomore when I was a Senior. I'm glad to hear it's still a great school. It's fricking beautiful too.

Yea I went back last yr to see it after the renovations, and I was totally blown away. It was beyond swanky.
