Londonistan bans Uber; Khan lectures about "safety"

The Sun - Uber license won't be renewed in London
Mayor Sadiq Khan said of the decision not to issue Uber with a licence: "I want London to be at the forefront of innovation and new technology and to be a natural home for exciting new companies that help Londoners by providing a better and more affordable service.
"However, all companies in London must play by the rules and adhere to the high standards we expect - particularly when it comes to the safety of customers. Providing an innovative service must not be at the expense of customer safety and security.
"I fully support TfL's decision - it would be wrong if TfL continued to license Uber if there is any way that this could pose a threat to Londoners' safety and security.

There are 3.5 million Uber users in Londonistan, over half of the population. There are over 40,000 Uber drivers.
Plus all the tourists, to whom it's a true godsend (no more being sussed as a Yank and being charged treble fare by a cabbie, innit?).

His explanation doesn't make any sense.

Yet he wants to bring in millions of illiterate barbarians who've had no medical care.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that probably 95% of London taxi drivers are likely Paks?

Just learn to use the tube dude. When I went it took a while to get used to it(especially since I was drinking 95% of the time) but it was really incredible but well it worked.

TfL said that it had rejected the company’s application to renew its licence because “Uber’s approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility” in relation to reporting serious criminal offences, obtaining medical certificates and driver background checks. The licensing body also said it was concerned by Uber’s use of Greyball, software that can be used to block regulatory bodies from gaining full access to its app and undertaking regulatory or law enforcement duties.
Tldr- I'll save you the trouble. It's a bunch of bullshite. It's absurd this is being cloaked as a safety measure.

Authoritarian bureaucracy gonna authoritarian bureaucracy.
People are constantly surprised when their government acts in such a way every time.

Hello fellow PB posters. I am fluent in Bureaucratese so allow me to translate Mr. Khan's words for you:
"I haven't figured out a way yet to shake down Uber for massive amounts of cash to fund my lavish lifestyle, so they shall be banned until such a way is found. Good day."

I think it has as much or more to do with people moving away from the cabs and his buddies Habib, Mohamed, and Tariq driving...

They aren't. To be a Black Cab driver is very grueling test. You literally have to learn every street on the map. Check out on youtube for the test. I mainly used the tube or Uber there, but my last day I opted for a Black Cab. It was pricey but I had a great conversation with a local there.
