Good, those who get Medicaid have done nothing to deserve it.

With a balance sheet...

I'm not saying he is doing it the right way, but he is doing it. More than you can say for others.
They can't even discuss a balance sheet in DC.

Didn't we just have the worst recession since the Great Depression? Uh, no, not in Louisiana which was largely unaffected by the housing crash and the national recession.

So why did the amount of La. taxes collected fall from 11.0 billion in 2008 to 10.2 billion in 2009 to 8.75 billion in 2010???????????? In 2011 they rose to about 8.85 billion and to almost 9 billion in 2012???

LINK

The fact is the overall economy hurt La. even though it wasn't as severe as it could have been.

You realize that a balanced budget in LA is required, right?

have no problem with government "draining" money out of its accounts. I DESPISE seeing governmental entities, such as BREC and the EBR Library Board, sitting on millions of dollars in their accounts in banks while claiming they cannot cut our taxes or they will go broke. If we could ever find out how many hundreds of millions of dollars local and state governments have in their piggy banks, there would be a tax revolution.

Certainly, and it's tough to do when revenues are declining.

That's why Jindal gets an A in fiscal responsibility in my book. He made tough decisions without raising taxes.

Jindal and the R's being in charge is one of the reasons why La hasn't been affected as much as the rest of the country.

This is a political "story" that really is about Jindal getting political contributions from those in the nursing home industry and supposedly using the funds in question to make sure they are taken care of. That's why it's a topic of discussion- the budget factor is simply a smokescreen to get to the politics allegedly involved.

this is a fund set up to match funds for the elderly. Obamacare is health insurance and to my knowledge doesnt pay for nursing homes, hospice and other needs of the elderly that medicaid does.

a large part of our economy in this state being based on oil and gas is the reason we did'nt have the recession a large part of the nation did. and as a person that spent the last 10yrs in the real estate buisiness i can tell you that Katrina saved our realestate market. we as a state were loosing value very quickly and then katrina proped up values in south La. new orleans real estate is still super high and with the resurgance of areas in the city you cant find a house for less than 200k hardly.

But we still had a recession and tax revenues dropped a considerable amount. The number of poor people increased too.

Fine, but how did that help the state balance the budget? The state isn't in the property tax business.

This may have helped individuals and municipalities, but it wouldn't directly help the state.

Go look at the jobs numbers for La. and you will see in 2007 the unemployment rate in Dec was 3.7, bu tit jumped to 5.5 in Dec. of 2008, to 6.9 in Dec of 2010, to 7.7 to Dec of 2011. It was at 5.7 in Dec of 2013.

The jobs numbers reflects the poor economy we saw in La.

I agree, Jindal isn't presidential material.

BTW, neither was Obama.

What???

I would MUCH rather the state have a trust that they can use earnings from to pay for reoccurring expenses rather than have the tax payers foot the bill every year.

That is exactly what this thread is about, Jindal has raided a trust that was set up to use INTEREST from to help fund Medicaid. To say that he is balancing the budget while raiding the principle in a trust is a bit insincere. What do we do when the principle is all gone? Raise taxes - BUT - he will not be governor when we have to raise the taxes, so he doesn't care what condition he leaves us in as long as he can point back and say, "Well, the budget was balanced when I was in charge..."

These are all short term fixes that do not help us in the long run.
