They also have an extremely old population, consistently weak GDP, low wage growth, and large amounts of debt to pay for their social services. All things immigrants paying taxes and contributing to the economy could help alleviate.

I am amazed to see how many people want THIS great country, always a country of immigrants, to be like Japan. I have nothing against Japan, but I do not want to be like them. There is plenty of space for being smarter about immigration and controlling our borders without coming anywhere close to the decidedly un-American way of doing things that Japan has long followed. 
And it makes me downright sad to see some of the comments in this thread.

Japan is so racist and fearful of outlanders...we had to threaten taking over their country for them to open up their borders to trade in the 19th century.
People forget how not too long ago...Japan closed itself off from the rest of the world on purpose.
They've never really steered too far from that.

Show me a case in the past 50 years or so where immigrants haven't been a net drain on the society they immigrate to? My guess is that once you get past Asians, you won't have anything.
