Per The Advocate:
quote:

The former mayor-president who tapped Carl Dabadie as his police chief said Monday that Dabadie has been treated unfairly and that his retirement will be a terrible blow to Baton Rouge.

Former Mayor-President Kip Holden named Dabadie as BRPD chief in 2013. The two had an especially close relationship and spoke every day, Holden said.

Holden credited Dabadie with leading Baton Rouge to its lowest level of homicides in a decade during 2016. And Holden criticized current Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome, who has been calling for a new BRPD chief since she was on the campaign trail a year ago.

"She made a decision on a good man, a good person, a good law enforcement officer, and it will come back to haunt her," Holden said.

Kip was a perfect example as to what the mayor of BR should be. He never put race into consideration when attempting to make rational decisions.

I was never a full-blown Kip supporter, but I'm coming to appreciate him more and more each day he's been out of office.

Well, the working class of BR will likely never get the mayor they want because of the demographics. But Kip was about as good as it can get given the circumstances.

This. Kip's greatest gift and biggest weakness was that he was a dreamer. He had a real vision for Baton Rouge and worked tirelessly (well, between dress-up sessions and picking up white women) to make that grand vision a reality.

Much of it has now come to pass (Revitalization of Downtown, Kids Museum, downtown greenway, Greenlight Part One, hosting PBA Championships, Bayou Country Superfest, Miss USA Pageant).

Some is now underway (Nicholson Gateway, Children's Hospital).

Others thought to once be pipe dreams (Downtown Alive, new zoo, bike paths connecting BREC parks, BR/NOLA commuter rail, LSU Lakes Project, widening of I-10, BR Loop, streetcar, etc) have all either become possible in the future or have died on the vine due to NIMBY's, interference from the Governor's Mansion, or a lack of leadership by the new regime.

Kip dreamed big, bigger than anyone else in this town. He dreamed of a Baton Rouge that was the South's next great city. In doing so, he often proposed projects that didn't make since for a city this size, yet somehow, he pushed us farther in that direction than any mayor in the city's history, all without resorting to race-baiting or partisan politics.

Kip, here's to you

Hopefully, some day you can be the greatest Lt. General this state has ever seen, or will ever see.

I appreciate everything he tried to do. And I respect that he did not use race baiting as a diversionary tactic.

Thats what I dislike about the entire Broome regime, it feels like she is trying to push an agenda that will (ironically and justly) harm her own constituents when it is all said and done.

To be fair, the foot stool upon which my feet are resting is smarter than Broome.

How she could push for a new chief and give the incompetent/criminal Director of Council on Aging a pass is frickING INSANE!

I agree with everything you said. Now I do not believe all of these dreams are feasible, but he certainly wasn't sitting on his hands and not coming up with ideas.

I'm conservative by nature, but if I want a Democrat in office who has ideas and wants to spend money; the place to have him is at home where you can watch him/her and voice your concerns directly.

He did have some weak spots. He allowed the police department to shrink in numbers, he allowed different departments to slide, and he had a chance to get involved more with the SG thing on the side of giving folks an ISD without having to form a city first. He also got petty about allocating resources to fix bridges and the like when a council bucked what he wanted.

Broome want a 5 mill tax for roads, etc. I know where she could easily pick up 2.2 mills.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't Kip run for Mayor again in 3 years? I hope someone could talk him into running for BR Mayor again.

Well, for one, the COA isn't under the control of the mayor. They're a private organization the receives govt money. Two, the head of the COA is extremely well connected politically, especially to the local judicial branch. She would never go after another "powerful" black woman, especially one that now holds the purse strings to one of the biggest potential Democrat slush funds BR has probably ever seen.

You are 100% on target.

Broome knew better and chose not to get involved. She like Kip kept her mouth shut.

Neither spoke out even though both should have.
