Is there anything more liberal and nanny state than not being allowed to pump your gas?

What kind of pussy arse man would live in a state like that?

Got some more of that context?

didn't all gas stations use to be like this?

Careful brah....my first job at 11 (in 1971) was working in a gas station pumping gas (among other things)......there was something called "full service"

It's kind of dumb but I can see us wanting to do that with human truck drivers to avoid an economic devastation. Thems a ton of good paying jobs that prog developers are determined to eliminate.

When I lived in Oregon, it was strange at first. Eventually it became kind of nice especially because it rained so much. Was awkward when I had to fill a gas can for mowers and such. Also, the attendants always screwed up when fueling my boat.

Full Service was great. This isn't full service though, just fueling up.

I was shocked by this the first time I visited New Jersey. I went to pump my own gas, and the attendant almost jerked the pump nozzle from my hands. It's a union thingy.

You obviously don't know what the word "full" means today.......I don't either so there's that
People should tell the attendant to "fill it up with high test" and see what the reaction would be

Didn't know there was a state like this, but 'Union thingy" was my first thought when I saw the thread.
I drove thru New Jersey once, but didn't have to stop for gas so I was unaware of this fact.
Of course, all stations used to be like this - not from force of law, but because 'that was just the way it was.' You'd get your tires aired up, your oil level checked, brake fluid topped off, etc.
And gas was as low as 19c a gallon. ahhh - good ol days.
edit - whoa!! - this says Oregon has that also. I spent a week or so in Oregon back in '07 and don't recall that. I was on my motorcycle at the time, so I had to fill up quite a bit. Either it doesn't apply to motorcycles, or my Alzheimer's is working overtime today.
So I retract my assertion about not filling up in New Jersey - that was back in '01 so it could have happened and slipped my recollection too.

This thread is kinda random with no context, but when my wife and I did 2 months traveling around the country this was pretty pervasive in the entire PNW. Seems like it started around Washington maybe Idaho. Stopped in Cali I think. It was weird to me and I never knew why it was like that.
ETA:looks like it was just Oregon. Shite all runs together up there.

In my experience, full service was a fuel up, check fluids, check tire pressure, clean windshield, etc. Wasnt just fueling. Is that not Full Service?

I traveled to Portland on business and had to rent a car. I had a day to explore and I drove out and explored the Columbia River basin. I had to stop for gas in one of those small towns and I thought the man was going to have a stroke when I grabbed the gas pump. Told me I could go to jail for doing that in this state.
I dont think thats the case, but it is a weird thing to not be able to pump your own gas.

You missed the sarcasm Douboy. Your description is full service but I'm willing to bet that most attendants today couldn't find the dipstick.

Why is this the law? Do they think people are gonna do this?

Are you calling Tony Soprano a pussy?

I'm heading to Oregon for the eclipse in August. Completely forgot you can't pump your own gas there.
