This is a great thread and I've wondered the same thing. What is their end game?
When Drudge had a headline about them targeting the Pope I was like "would they really do that (not that they COULD, mind you)? That would ensure their demise basically." But if they really just want to terrorize and lay the groundwork for the NEXT AQ, IS, etc. it might make sense.
Whatever their rationale, I hate them so much. Barbarians. Lower than Nazis - at least Nazis had an appreciation for art and culture.

Wrong. The point is for them to raise hell so the US and allies have a pretext for invading Syria which was taken from (pretext for Syria invasion) them by a real militia, namely, the one led Sayeed Hassan Nasrallah of Hezbollah. Most of these guys are not even from the Northern Levant, they're foreign mercenaries.

Very productive if the goal is to create a pretext for war in Syria to oust Al Assad, which Hezbollah, Russia and Iran prevented in 2012/2013. The US has no leverage if 'things are quiet', going forward. This idea of a Caliphate is joke anyways. If I remember correctly, something like five or six Caliphs of the distant past were 1/2 Greek, 3/4 Greek, so this idea of a fundamentalist Sunni Caliphate is laughable at best.

They're doing this out of desperation-- they didn't start beheading Americans-- despite having them for nearly a year-- until we starting basically annihilating them with air power.
