An Iowa man who burned a church LGBTQ flag in June was sentenced to 16 years in prison Wednesday.
Last month, Adolfo Martinez, 30, was convicted of a hate crime, third-degree harassment and reckless use of fire, the Des Moines Register reports.
In June, Martinez stole a Pride flag that was hanging outside of Ames United Church of Christ and lit it on fire.
Story County Attorney Jessica Reynolds said Martinez was given the additional hate crime charge due to belief that Martinez burned the flag because of "what it represents as far as sexual orientation."

I'm pretty sure convicted murderers have received less time.

So you go to prison for burning a pride flag, but it's perfectly fine to burn the American flag on television?
Makes sense.

Called it a hate crime. What if these LGBT people burn bibles, is that not a hate crime?

So I cant burn a Russian flag or an Iranian flag?

Very simple solution, Jury Nullification. Punishment doesn't fit the crime and the jury of peers would tell the state to shove it up their collective asses.
Is this not taught anymore?

Upside down world we live in.
20 years ago this would have been ridiculous.
Radical progressive ideology is ruining this nation

Didn't I just read about an Islamic Terrorist who pleaded guilty to attempting to murder hundreds of people, getting 3 years?

Yeah that will get overturned. Flag burning has long been considered free speech. The man has a right to express his opinion regarding that flag. Sure it’s theft and vandalism but it’s not a hate crime.

This is a terribly sentence. Hate crime legislation is generally speaking awful law.

Police said Adolfo Martinez, 30, got into a dispute at the Dangerous Curves Gentlemen's Club at 111 Fifth Street, was kicked out of the bar, and then came back early Tuesday morning.
"He told the people in the bar that he was going to burn the place to the ground and at that point he made reference to burning 'their flag,'" Ames police Cmdr. Jason Tuttle said.

Tuttle said Martinez didn't make his motive clear to officers. But Martinez, now out of jail, did make his motive clear when KCCI went to his house to ask him about the charges Wednesday.
"It's my honor. It is written. It is a judgment and it's written to execute vengeance on the heathen and punishments on the people," Martinez said. "It's my honor to do so. It was an honor to do that. It's a blessing from the Lord."
"So this was about homosexuality?" KCCI reporter Chris Gothner asked.
"Yes, yes, yes. Exactly," Martinez replied. "I burned down their pride, plain and simple."
Martinez said he had no regrets whatsoever and has no plans to fight the charges.
"No, I'm guilty as charged," he said.

The progs on here are probably laughing with glee about this. They really are scary authoritarians.

I'm an American. I certainly feel hated when someone burns the American flag.
