The government is looking to solve the homelessness by offering tiny, government-constructed modular units in the backyards of willing homeowners.

Portland officials are looking for four backyards to place its Accessory Dwelling Units, what some people may call a granny flat, or a tiny home minus wheels.

Under the pilot program taking effect this summer, the homeowners will take over the heated, fully plumbed tiny houses in five years and can use them for rental income.

The project, called A Place for You, is believed to be the first in the nation to recruit stable residents to address a homeless crisis that’s gotten so bad the city last year declared a state of emergency and made it legal to sleep on the street.

Residents just passed a $260 million housing bond, but it will be two years before those units are ready, said Mary Li, director of Multnomah County’s new Idea Lab, which developed the concept.

2 years to build the units, but the program starts this summer. So they live in your back yard for 2ish years.

Then they will build the unit, and in 5 years you own it.

1- What if the homeless person is still there? Can you force them out?

2- Is the unit going to be in any shape to rent out after that time?

It's there city... your yard.... But.... wow.

It's an interesting idea. You point out some valid concerns, but maybe it will work. Why not give it a try?

His title is exactly what you quoted.

The government wants people to allow the homeless to live in their backyard.

This is exactly right. If it's localized, why should I care?

Must be people of German descent, though.

I don't think it's about caring or getting worked up. It's just a conversation.

I'm more worried about being chopped up into little pieces. How about the homeless live in the backyards of every government official/ employee?

It's too localized for me to care. If they want to commit suicide via multiculturalism, more power to them.

I don't have a problem with it. I DO have a problem when the liberal loons try to force other people to let homeless people live in their back yard.

I don't see that there is much chance that any of those tiny homes are going to be worth much, unless the city pays to fix it up at the end of 5 years. You can have a perfectly good bathroom in that house, and these homeless people will still shite on the front stoop...

Meaning they would first have to kick the homeless out after five years (good luck with that) and then they would have to pay to completely renovate it to remove all of the health hazards that come with a homeless person calling it home for an extended period of time.

I find it admirable to want to help people. I know a family who had a child decide to live in the streets. The dad was always hard on himself because he could not understand why he CHOOSE to live that way.

They all tried everything... no go.

My point is that not everything is as black and white as we want them to be. He made his choice.

Why should we pay for him over a vet who is homeless?

Well in this case, they wouldn't choose someone over a homeless vet.

I would never agree to this, but if the homeowners must give consent and people agree to this when what's the issue? I have to believe this to be the case because forcing homeowners to do this would be illegal on so many levels even Portlands local government wouldn't try it.

As far as when the five years is up, if I were a homeowner and agreed to this, I would require a contract, essentially a lease, that would give me eviction power and immediate transfer of title to the structure to me upon completion of the 5 year term. I'd also require for me to approve the tenants before they were placed there and full eviction power should they become unruly during the five year period. Oh, and I'd also make the government ensure that the structure would be returned to its original condition when it becomes mine.

If I were a neighbor I'd be looking to my homeowners covenant if there was one because I'd be pissed if my house value decreased because my neighbor did something like this, but if you don't have anything like that your just fricked.

I'd be so pissed if my neighbor tried to build a homeless shelter in his yard.

I hope a bunch of liberals line right up and move the homeless right into their backyard. When they start dealing web heroin needles and alcohol bottles in their backyards and the cops refuse to deal with it then it will be the homeowner forced to accept that they made a stupid decision based on muh fee fees.

You have seen how federal judges take "localized" issues and turn them into "rights" to shove down the thraots of all 50 states, right?
