constitutions of 7 states ban atheists from holding office

So that's being enforced?

well it has been tried (and failed)

how many states list a gender, race, or specific religion from being banned from holding office?

obviously those couldn't be enforced, either, so why don't those provisions remain?

I can't even recall the last time I had a discussion with anyone in the workplace about religion. The truth is, both the workplace and our public school system are practically 100% secular in nature.

I simply don't think that someone professing to be an agnostic or atheist is a big deal these days. Will some people express their disagreement or disappointment with anyone who professes to be non-religious? Of course, just like some people make fun of Christians, or maybe any and all professions of faith.

I simply dont think a person's views on religion, pro or con, are apt to affect a person's employment status or much of anything else.

Now, I do believe that you've hit upon something with regards to politics, sfp. If you plan to run for Governor of Louisiana anytime soon, I would not advise you to emphasize that you're an atheist. But, is that really a form of discrimination? I would say that voters have a right to consider that factor as part of their overall evaluation of you.

Besides, there may even be some states where being non-religious is better than, say, professing to be a born again Christian. For example, i wonder if California Gov. Jerry Brown is a member of any "conventional" faith? Somehow, i can't picture him professing his faith in Jesus.

I'll have to check on him, though. I'm not really sure what his deal is, but whatever it is, it hasn't kept him from being successful in California politics.

Did a quick check on Jerry Brown, and this short bio lists him as being Roman Catholic. It also mentions that he has studied Buddhism, though, so who knows what he really claims to believe?

it wouldn't surprise me if a self-professed atheist could get elected governor in some states, though.

Louisiana? No, it's not happening in Louisiana.
