Do I still have an ethical duty to protect his/her identity?

I say no. Hell, I'd argue if I published the wrong info the source told me, I probably have an ethical duty to publicly disclose the "source" at such point.

Tell me why I'm wrong.

You have the right to kill them because they are anonymous so no one can connect you to it.

Stranger murders are very much harder to solve!

No source with good information would than want anything to do with you considering their freedom is in your hands. It is that journalists fault for getting burned, they have to take the responsibility.

There doesn't even have to be a source if you keep it "anonymous"

So essentially it's a speculate whatever you want for free card/tactic.

Just flood the airwaves with every MSM outlet citing each other's citings of one of their anonymous sources and some people think it's gospel because it hits them from every angle.

The internet destroyed networks and print media and they had to cut costs by letting go established journalists and keep the cheap labor of people in their 20's

That's why our MSM is shot.

The adults with integrity are gone.

A better question is why can't the NSA and the rest of the IC use their full capabilities to catch anonymous sources who leak classified info. They can listen to every call a journalist makes or has ever made from any phone, track every place the person has driven, they can tail them, get video from every restaurant/bar/coffeeshop they visit etc. soon enough they would find out who the source is and then they could arrest them. It's not like these sources are all Snowden, 99% of the leakers could get caught in just a few days.

I think their abilities on this front may be a tad overstated.

Bias MSM journalist shop sauces until one tells them what they want to hear.

Look how long it took Dan Rather to find a fake letter to back up his sauces.
