Sort of political I guess since its tax related and I'm sure y'all on here have more tax knowledge than others on the other boards.

But anyways I didn't think of this till today, I factory ordered a new ski boat out of Florida. I live in MS. On the forms I signed for financing they included 3,100 in sales tax.

The tax collectors office here in MS today when I got my car tag (a 1270 dollar arse raping) happened to mention be glad I didn't get the car out of state cause I would have had to pay the sales tax on it. Then I said what about a boat out of state? She said same thing.

Will I be double taxed for buying across state lines or did the factory likely include MS sales tax in financing for me?

You should only have to pay tax in the state you register the boat in

You may have to pay sales tax where you buy, unless you have the boat delivered, but no- you don't pay taxes in 2 states

You should have told them you're registering it in your state. Don't know how each state works, but when I bought a truck in Missouri, they asked if I wanted to register it there or in Arkansas. I said Arkansas, because you pay sales tax, but if did do it in Missouri then I would've paid registration and then got taxed in Arkansas.

However Arkansas pays personal property tax every year too which is bs in my opinion. Generally you will have to pay a transfer fee to bring it to a new state whether it be a tax, fee or registration

Bought a boat in Texas. Paid Louisiana the sales tax. No sales tax owed in Texas. Was a pain in the arse getting signoff from local school board for parish tax and sign off from state that state taxes were paid before I could go to the DMV.

Here is what the MS Dept of Revenue site says:

I purchased a new vehicle in another state. What do I need to register and title that vehicle in Mississippi?

?When registering the vehicle in Mississippi, you will need to provide the title from the other state and an odometer disclosure statement. If the vehicle was not titled in the other state, you will need to provide the Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin.?

How much sales tax do I pay when I buy a vehicle?

?You must pay the state sales tax on any vehicle purchased outside Mississippi and on any casual sale of an automobile. The state sales tax rate is 5% and is based on the dealer’s selling price before subtracting any dealer's discounts and trade-ins. Tax on a casual sale is based on the assessed value of the vehicle as determined by the most recent assessment schedule.

If you purchase a vehicle out-of-state and it is first tagged in Mississippi, you will not be given any tax credit for any sales tax paid to the other state.?

LINK

The same site also has this re boats:

Does Mississippi register boats or watercraft? Boat trailers?

?Please contact the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (phone 601-432-2400) for information on boat and watercraft registration requirements in Mississippi.

Boat trailers are tagged as private trailers. When you register the trailer, you will need to provide proof of ownership such as the bill of sale, Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (MSO) or title.?

I'd call DWF and see what they say. Maybe also ask the seller what taxes they charged. MS or FL? Will they remit to MS. Etc.

P.S.

Louisiana gives you a credit for tax paid in the state of purchase. LINK

Thanks for yalls help. They included 3100 in the financing along with registration fee of 175 dollars.

If MS sales tax is 5% on vehicles they may have just paid it for me then. Because the boat before taxes and fees was 62,000. Which 5% is exactly 3100 dollars

Finally found Florida law boat sales to non residents are exempt from Florida sales tax.

Still concerned because I called the dealership and the guy said it was likely they charged me Florida sales tax but the financial lady was gone so he likely didn't know what he was talking about. Just hope the dealership isn't trying to frick me by tacking on an extra 3k but surely they aren't that stupid to try that

Florida sales tax is 6%, so if the math is 5% then it makes sense they did Mississippi tax. Given I've never bought a boat new, I thought you paid it at the time of registration? But maybe because you got it financed and it's such a high amount they throw it into the financing?

A dealership can pay the taxes up front for you and then put into the financing on a vehicle.
