Listen, I'm not for either free college or free trade schools, but if you have one, why not the other?I'd proffer that knowing how to weld or do electrical work is better than any liberal arts degree.

We need tougher access to college and it should start with more stringent entrance exams. I would say 50% of 4 year degrees should be dropped back to occupational training (Associate Degree) and leave college for the serious math, science, engineering, etc. students.
Get rid of cheap money for college because it has been one of the reason costs have skyrocketed the past 20 yrs.

Because free college is an easy sell to millennials who thinkle college is mandatory and guarantees successful future. Those kids have no clue and want some one else to pay for it. They don't understand that getting some one else to pay for their college doesn't control college costs which have spiraled out of control. When those very millenials reach their 40s and have to pay for others college tuition which will no doubt still be spiralling up and taxes are further increased on them, they may get a clue.

As a gen X guy, I can tell you I see a ton of trade skill guys making bank. They're all gen x or boomers. Might want to start listening or be satisfied to spend a house loan on a useless degree for a Mcjob.

If a good ole country boy doesn't want to attend either, why not give him a F-150 pickup....

You must realize, mahdragonz, that a particular person's offspring is quite special and talented, whereas the generation of offspring is quite entitled and lazy.

FWIW any young person who can read labor markets and future demand curves would be chomping at the bit to be in HVAC if they can't get an engineering or mathematics degree.

College is not vocational school. The problem are people who don't understand that and pursue degrees without job prospects. Still, there are many in the liberal arts sectors who end up with good jobs after a second degree or end up in a wholly unrelated field. Reducing universities to a STEM or bust thing is retarded.

This^^^, If you can work with your hands there is money to be made. Case in point, needed my 12x16 deck replaced, called 5 contractors for bids, 2 were not interested, 3 said they would be over to bid the job, 1 showed up and bid it at $9000 for straight replacement, tore the bitch off myself and made it 30% bigger (14x20) than the bid price of $9000, tore out the patio below and had a concrete contractor expand it to 20x25 ft and spent $11500 total for new deck and patio.

The irony of people at a LSU sports forum site complaining about liberal arts degrees at universities. If look at the list of majors for our football, basketball, and baseball players we wouldn't have any team if we insisted only STEM majors and no worthless liberal arts majors. Oh by the way business degrees are liberal arts degrees also. Economics, Business administration and so on are social science degrees. Economics and Business are not natural sciences.

You all are pathetic.

As long as we continue to build new structures, there will be an equal demand (and less supply) of HVAC installors or technicians. Especially in the South (which has more new construction than other areas).

You are a self-admitted communist. Forgive me if I disregard your opinion on the ills and problems of Western civilization.

I am not a communist. I am a socialist. Marxian Socialism is part of Western Civilization.

Quite unfortunately so. I blame the Enlightenment. You'd all be up for Argentinian helicopter rides if there was any sense in the world, or, at the very least, an extreme suppression of the most murderous, illogical political and economic system in human history.

OP is an idiot. What if we run out of sociologists, anthropologists, and gender studiesologists?

Extremely useful field that has been woefully politicized since the 30s.

You mean capitalism. I would love to suppress capitalism in all its extremes.
