Or, GZ could have notified the authorities and remained in his vehicle. Or GZ could have identified himself as neighborhood watch when he started following TM. Or he could have called out Hey Kid. Where are you heading?
Or, or, or...if, if, if...GZ was operating under the backdrop of recent crime in his neighborhood and the situation of a suspicious individual walking around the area at the time. Let me relate a recent incedent in my neighborhood.
Just the other night, I had this pushy white guy come trying to sell stuff in our neighborhood that has a no soliciting policy. He came to my house and was supposedly selling alarm systems. It was after 9pm. I felt the encounter rather odd honestly and he seemed to be asking some fishy questions. He was told by me that I wasn't interested several times until I had to get forceful. When he left, I called the police and tried to keep an eye on the guy from my yard. Fine and dandy, except he went straight to an elderly neighbor's house. If you think for a moment I wasn't behind his butt watching him and watching out for my neighbors, you are wrong. Darn right I followed him to watch out for my neighbors who may have been in imminent danger before the police could arrive. They likely couldn't handle him if he was a criminal, I could physically take him though. To further compound the situation, as I was in my yard I noticed my sister in law was leaving her house(two down from mine) to go to another neighbor's house and was unaware of the guy. He might have accosted her, again before the police could even arrive. How the Hades was I supposed to know at the time what this suspicious guy was capable of? I felt it a duty to watch my neighbors' house(s) AND watch out for my sister in law. If YOU feel it was prudent to wait on the police in that situation, fine...not me. I was every bit in the right for watching this guy because others less capable of defending themselves' safety was potentially in jeopardy.
Now with that said, are you going to stick with the notion that following someone suspicious in YOUR neighborhood is always
a bad idea and wrong when there are other mitigating circumstances involved? If your answer is "no", then you had better be prepared to cut GZ some slack yo!
