Obviously there were white supremacists who had their own agenda in Charlottesville. There are a group of people, like me, who don't want to take down the statues because they are a reminder of an important history. On the other side, there are groups of people like many of BLM who want to take down statues because any person associated with slavery must never be honored in any form. And of course there are ANTIFA people who look like they came out of their parent's basement wielding baseball bats. I disagree with their reasoning, because it becomes a slippery slope for obvious reasons. But there is a fourth side that views memorials for Confederate soldiers as a memorial for people who were "losers."

I'll contend that most politicians have simplified this all as two sided. Either you're a nazi sympathizer or an unpatriotic person who wants Washington's Jefferson's monuments taken down. Times like this remind me how the media and politicians love to divide us. It really does win elections.

TL;Dr Version: Not everything is black and white in this.

Kessler, the organizer of the nazi side, was a former occupy wall street rabble rouser and consultant for the DNC for the 2012 election...

It's even murkier

I thought the organizer was Chris Cantwell who has been a white supremacist and anarchist for quite a few years.

He's slimmed down in the last 3 years...

ETA: also, looks like that stuff about Kessler being an Obama supporter turned out to be fake news.

So the alt right is so dumb, they followed a liberal to a neo-Nazi rally?

You're struggling with the idea that people carrying tiki torches in a Nazi rally are dumb?

You missed the point. The 2 basic reasons most folks who want Confederate symbols limited to museums, cemeteries, and battlefields are:

1. Confederates fought against the United States of America. Leaders like RE Lee and Stonewall Jackson broke the sacred oath they took at West Point Or when they entered the US Army). They are not singled out because they owned slaves.

2. Many if not most of these statues were erected as part of an attempt to whitewash Antebellum Southern history and glorify the movement for Jim Crow in the period 1880-1930.

One of the people carrying a tiki torch had a University of Arkansas engineering t-shirt on. That is a pretty tough major. I'm sure he is smart, but smart people don't always have common sense.

He might even be on this board
