But there are honest legislatures in B.R.
There is only one legislature in Baton Rouge and it's seriously corrupt. Not 100% but a significant portion.
The pay raise issue is why I am so pleased Amendment #1 passed on Tuesday. It passed by the largest margin of any of the amendments, 75% as I recall.
From now on, if the legislature raises their pay, or the pay of most statewide elected officials including the PSC, the effective date of the raise must be after
the next election for those positions.
I'm one of the few persons I know who thinks legislator pay is much too low. It should be increased in order to attract more qualified people who are willing to give up their current good jobs to serve in the legislature. I've been approached about running for the legislature but I just can't justify the time requirements vs. the low pay. I would have to take a serious reduction in compensation just because my self-employment business would suffer too much in my absence.
Raise the comp of legislators to $100-125K, make it effective after
the voters get to decide if their current legislator is worth that amount and if not, vote in a new person. At least it would allow someone better qualified to run for the position before the higher salary goes into effect.
