The answer is 85. Teachers are reportedly struggling.

It's so incredibly screwed up! The onus is on the schools, not on these uneducated, culturally unaware immigrants and, as a taxpayer, I have a huge problem with that. It's taking resources away from the majority of the kids who DO speak English, who DO understand, more or less, the way this system works. When we came to this country I didn't even have to be put in ESOL classes because my English was so good. I got a B+ on my very first paper written for middle school English class. I was the translator for my parents whose English wasn't as good as mine. All because my parents used their resources to get me an English tutor in our home country. They knew it was important to assimilate in the US, something many of these people will never do. Schools are way out of their league in trying to deal with so many issues that have nothing to do with education.

Ugh.

I just upvoted conservativewifeymom

I think this makes two times.

But you are dead right on assimilation. I don't have a problem with helping them get started, but at some point they need to realize they moved here, not the other way around. Billions are being spent trying to make people feel like they never left home. Then you have crap like the girl last year in her valedictory speech.

Instead of making it a big deal that she came here and worked hard and succeeded, she threw it in our faces that she was illegal and we had paid for her education and she had a full scholarship to a public university.
