Because prior to that we didn'thave multiple generations of people too lazy and stupid to take care of themselves.

AKA, Dems figured out how to buy votes.

I need to find a good book on the history of the federal income tax. I'd love to know how they rationalized it. I imagine it was kinda like Obamacare getting passed.

no reason for an income tax if you take loopholes out of the corporate tax codes and make business actually pay a fair percentage (not mom and pop shops, your big boys that actually use said loopholes).

with a consumption tax, we could fund everything we need

The most interesting tidbit about the process was the problem of actual collection. Tax collectors have been attacked or killed throughout history.

The govt went to the president of Sears and Roebuck for advice. He came up with the idea of withholding. 'Don't ask them to send it in. Take it before they get paid.'

1. You didn't have the high costs of maintaining roadways and navigable waterways that you do now.

2. Social programs (runs the gambit from SNAP to NEA to sugar subsidies).

Yeah. I know the FED, Income Tax, and the endless war cycle all started at the same time. I'll look for that book.

Thanks,

One of the most destructive things we ever did to this Republic. Permit direct taxation of the citizenry. Undermined the role of the States in providing another separation of powers (which had already begun during the Civil War). Encouraged crony capitalism and legislative corruption. It will be the end of this Nation.

It's is an antique monstrosity that was conceived of around the Civil War.

It has morphed from a revenue tool to a social control tool.

It needs to be abolished.

The beginning of the end.

Now most people that pay taxes don't pay attention to how much they actually pay.

I agree, so long as food and medicine (plus medical care) is exempt.

Everyone has skin in the game at that point--those of us with regular jobs, those who work in the cash economy, the deadbeat, the welfare baby mama--and can all share.

In theory socialists should like this idea as it is more in tune with their "shared sacrifice" views (of course, they only want the "little people" to do any sharing).

Bison was plentiful & cheap, and energy costs were a lot more reasonable.

Even Starbucks coffee was reasonably cheap back then.
