I do not see why Trump would oppose this. It helps American companies by giving them bigger tax breaks and hurts foreign companies by levying higher taxes on their imports. What's the issue?

That article is terrible.

It is littered with superlatives and exaggerated adjectives.

Like a 9th grade debate/paper.

I had no idea what they were really talking about.

Hopefully it's a tax on blind linking.

0/10 what?

It's an article by Steve Forbes. You know, the economist? It wasn't a troll attempt or anything. I didn't know about this before reading the article.

Helps American companies. Hurts the American middle class and foreign businesses who employ millions here.

So, hypothetically, importers of coffee beans will pay taxes on resale of coffee with no deduction for the actual cost of the beans?? Riggggghhht! I call BS on this. At worst, there might be a tariff-type adjustment that the importer pays that leveliizes outside goods with American cost of goods - in such cases, it would be a fraction of what is implied here.

Wrong. It was an option piece. All opinion pieces are trolling by their very nature.

I'm no economist but this sounds good to me. Gives a leg up to American companies by effectively reversing the status quo where cheap foreign labor (sweatshops) makes it difficult to compete.

As a consumer, I already pay taxes on the full amount of the cost of a product why shouldn't we make foreign companies do the same? Passing the cost of the tax onto the consumer will make buying American that much easier.

You think American companies don't make stuff with components made in other parts of the world?

Most of your phone is made of components from other countries. Apple doesn't manufacture everything here from scratch.

Can I save this for every time someone posts a Brietbart article?

The only way that I'm buying American is if the quality of the product is superior. I'd rather pay more for a better product.

I've bought one American vehicle in my life because the foreign made vehicles are just built better and offer far superior warranties. Right now they usually cost less too.

Same for kitchen appliances. Samsung > Maytag all day.

The list goes on...

To Hit Consumers With A Horrible New Tax

Where does it say exactly where consumers are hit with a new tax? I just see a tax on companies that people will do business with. Again, where is "the tax" being levied against the consumers?

You don't think that the tax will be passed on to the consumer? You think that companies are just going to eat that loss? That's not the way that the world works. The costs are always passed on to the consumer.

ETA: It's no different than the asinine idea that raising the minimum wage would help our economy. Raising the minimum wage hurts the middle class because those extra costs are inevitably passed on to the consumer.

It's a blanket tariff. Despite what Trump critics say about Trump on tariffs, Trump has never been for blanket tariffs. Trump has always specified targeted tariffs if needed.

Trump's exact quote on this 20% tariff proposed by Paul Ryan is, "I don't love it".

On the surface this 20% tariff appears to shift the tax burden on imports and takes it off exports. It would appear that this kind of tariff policy would incentive companies to manufacture goods at home. But I'm not totally sure about the consequences of this tariff policy.

I need more info...more analysis.

My gut tells me, let's stop taxing exports, abandon the idea of blanket tariffs and only use tariffs as a negotiating tool for bad trading partners.

Democrats will someday be back in power, and they won't hesitate to either ramp up this GOP-created tax or go for the VAT. This would be hypocritical--rip apart the Republicans over this tax, and then go on to compound their felony. A VAT would crush future U.S. economic growth rates

W T F!

So the article had nothing to do with the tax, it was basically "Not a bad idea, but it's not fair that Republicans get to call the shots now"

So you're basically saying it's a trickle down effect tax. I did not read that into your title of the thread. Your title is a little ambiguous.
