House passes $956B farm bill
LINK

quote:

The House on Wednesday approved a mammoth $956 billion farm bill in a bipartisan vote.

Members approved the House-Senate agreement on farm policy in a 251-166 vote. A majority of Republicans backed the bill, with only 63 voting "no." But a majority of Democrats opposed it, with 103 voting against.

....

While dozens of Republicans opposed the bill, none argued against it during debate, perhaps in part because Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said they support it.

In addition to the House leaders, House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) voted for it, as did Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

Oh... about the bill...

quote:

A majority of the spending in the bill is for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), informally called the food stamp program

So howabout that Democrat majority that opposed the bill? Maybe us small government types should join them? Uh... Nope.

quote:

Democrats opposed to the bill complained about cuts to federal food stamps... much of the Democratic opposition came from members who opposed the $8 billion cut to the program. The original House proposal would have cut $39 billion from food stamps, while the Senate-passed bill called for a $4 billion cut.

“This bill will make hunger worse in America, not better,” said Rep. James McGovern (Mass.), who has led the House Democrats’ charge against cuts to the program. “If this bill passes, thousands and thousands of low-income Americans will see their already meager food benefit shrink.”

Tough times ahead!

quote:

The bill finds $8.6 billion in savings by requiring households to receive at least $20 per year in home heating assistance before they automatically qualify for food stamps, instead of the $1 threshold now in place in some states. ... Democrats said the cut is unkind given the benefits given to wealthy farmers under the bill. Rep. Ron Kind (D-Wis.)

Anyone voting for an incumbent (on either side of the political aisle) at this point is a fool.

I'd be curious to see who opposed it. Farm bills are sadly a sacred cow in politics.

It's both sides, I have said this forever. It's amazing to me that we all can't see this. The two party system is a failure. Unfortunately, we keep falling for their lies.

The day I know for a fact the GOP is the party of fiscal responsibility and small gov't is the day I also know for a fact that I'm hooking up with two OT 10's in a penthouse suite for my next birthday.

No it isn't. It's just that the "sides" are Republican v. Democrat.

The "sides" are "the people" v. "the government".

I agree. I think at least some of the Tea Partiers are trying to fight for "the people", but it's very hard to tell these days.

Let it go, guys; there is no way that a Party CAN be against Government Subsidies to all the needy, and therein be demagogued by the Dems/MSM/Obama bully pulpit...and remain in power.

Forget politics. The Dems have ruined it anyway. They have about as much respect for the Constitutional Law process as do the Islamists. They simply use it's limitations on their OPPOSITION for hegemonic gain. Obama goes on National TV in a major address...and says as much.

It's a death spiral of growing Government until collapse. The prudent action at this time, would be to plan on action...AFTER the collapse.

Would be interesting to know if there are 'smoke filled rooms' on the Constitutional/Individual Freedom side doing this. I suspect not. You know the Dems/Authoritarian Statist are drooling and Matthews leg is shivering.

Thank the Good Lord...for Truth...and Faith.

The thing is what do you really expect with this bill?

The R's tried to pass a farm bill with more substantial cuts but the Senate would never pass it. They've fought over it for over 2 years..all the while extending the 2008 bill which was drafted with D's in power of all 3 branches and was spending more money than the bill we just passed today.

Republicans only control 1/3 of Government. I'd be livid if they controlled the majority of it and passed this. But in this case, I think the R's came out looking good..they managed a compromise and got double the food stamp cuts the Dems wanted to agree to.

They got rid of the Direct subsidy payments to farmers.

Sure I'd like more, but it really isn't feasible as the Dems would just then table the bill and it'd never pass, leaving us to extend the atrocious 2008 bill again. This is a step in the right direction at least.

When it's understood that it's not a party that needs an enema, rather the entire government will we be capable of moving in the right direction as a populous.

I like it only because they passed the USDA imported catfish inspection program, which was really needed regardless of what many politicians said about it.

Holding domestically produced catfish to higher standards via the USDA while holding imported fish standards to the lesser FDA standards was just bullshite, and was allowing imports to sell cheaper because they could use illegal antibiotics/chemicals to grow their fish. It has been vastly hurting the domestic industry. This will level the playing field without providing the industry any Gov't subsidy

How's that bait taste? You appear to have swallowed hard.

The original House bill only cut $39B. Out of just shy of $1T. A whopping 4% cut.

No. I agree the bill is still too much.

My point was, we shouldn't really blame Republicans in this instance, because the Dems wouldn't pass the more conservative bill. They came to a compromise on a bill that is better than the 2008 one.

I'd like to get more too, but when you only have 1/3 of the Gov't, there's not much you can do.

This says so very much about how and why bad bills get passed.

These big significant bills that shape our reality are filled with tiny little issues designed to appease the interests of people in order to get the larger, less agreeable things passed.

It would be like giving someone a bucket of sardines with a cookie on top, telling them that if they eat the cookie they have to eat all of the sardines. (Only applicable if you find sardines disgusting, analogy should be understood regardless of ones opinion of sardines).
